Defense Department cuts raise risk of job losses in Arizona

by John Yantis - Dec. 25, 2010 12:00 AM

The Arizona Republic

After enjoying nearly a decade of hefty increases in defense spending, contractors in Arizona lost nearly a fifth of their business this year and in the years ahead will be expected to compete for limited military dollars.

At stake are some of the tens of thousands of jobs that support military contracts and various defense projects throughout the state.

As the U.S. defense buildup after the 2001 terrorist attacks slowed and the Iraqi war wound down, the Pentagon cut back on spending. After leveling off in 2009, Defense Department contracts in Arizona in fiscal 2010 dropped nearly 19 percent to about $10 billion. snip

A March policy brief of the Arizona Chamber Foundation shows 21 percent of all manufacturing jobs in Arizona are in aerospace and defense, 2 percent more than computers and electronics. Those aerospace and defense jobs had an annual average salary of $85,000, 41 percent more than the average manufacturing salary and more than double the average wage across all industries, the report said.

Bomb, bomb , bomb. Bomb bomb Iran ...

2. He's a complete jerk?
Oh, I suppose there's the "jobs and economic development" angle, too. But I'll go with my first answer, Mr. Dawson.
