Michele Bachmann Calls 9-11 Responders Bill a New Entitlement Program
By Heather
Video @ link~

Our friends at News Hounds caught this one from the other day. Apparently one of our favorite wingnuts thinks that helping the 9-11 responders with their health care equals another evil entitlement program, and we all know how much Republicans hate welfare or Medicaid or Social Security as long as it's a program that's helping working people and not welfare for corporations.

Michele Bachmann Calls 9/11 Responders Bill “A New Entitlement Program”:

On Wednesday (12/22/10), Michele Bachmann (R-MN) spoke with Brian Sullivan before President Obama's news conference. At about the 2:40 mark in the segment, Sullivan asked about the passage of the 9/11 responders bill. "Do you think the GOP, though, took a little bit of a PR hit in opposing some of the spending on this bill?"

Bachmann said the GOP doesn’t oppose compensating first responders, per se. "It’s the fact of a lack of transparency and this bill, unfortunately, is a new entitlement program for all practical purposes."

Comment: Entitlement? To 9/11 first responders, it’s a matter of life and death. Shame on her. And shame on Sullivan for letting her get away with saying such a thing.

As their guest blogger suggests, yes, shame on both of them, but any response acknowledging that would require either of them of having the capacity to feel shame in the first place. It's pretty obvious neither of them does. Taking care of those that sacrificed their health when responding to 9-11 should be a no brainer politically, but this wingnut thinks it's a good opportunity to call it another "entitlement" and pretend that Republicans ever had any intention of doing right by those workers. Bravo Michele for doing your best to continue to show to the voters that you don't give one iota for the working class in this country.

And sadly the Republicans have decided this loon deserves a spot on the Intelligence Committee.

911 responders are limited in number by definition.

Thanks moron voters of the various districts, for allowing this dipshit to be in the majority.

5. Minnesot a is schizophrenic these days.
How can a state have both Bachmann and Franken as their representatives? Then again, this is the state that elected a professional wrassler as governor.

27. The professional wrestler won with only 35% of the vote in a 3 way race
and Bachmann has never won a majority of the vote in her district, only a plurality.

Minnesota is the poster state for Instant Runoff Voting.

17. Because they are not entitlements but insurance
that we pay into to collect benefits from when we need them.

12. We didn't see her at ground zero

Had she been there she might have understood the issue a little better. It isn't an entitlement when it is paid for. Paying for being a hero with your life without help is just not right. Several members of my union (AFSCME) have died or are dying from ground zero illnesses. They told the US the air there was safe.

16. So, what is the agricultural subsidy program that Ms Bachmann makes hundreds of thousands from?
Would you consider that an "entitlement" program?

that insurance comes from. They are dying and have no way to pay their medical bills. What an awful and callous thing for you to say.

And why shouldn't "the taxpayers" -- the American people -- do something to help these firefighters and other first responders who behaved so heroically and paid with their health?

God, how callous. You might be happier at another web site.

24. Workers' compensation payments are extremely limited.
Edited on Sun Dec-26-10 09:24 PM by The Velveteen Ocelot
I have no doubt that their workers' comp has long since been exhausted. These are people who are suffering long-term effects of exposure to asbestos and other substances and now have cancer or other illnesses, and are permanently disabled. Some will die. Some time, have a look at workers' comp payment schedules; you'd be shocked at how paltry the payments are for most permanent injuries.

9/11 was a unique circumstance. As a nation we should do this relatively small thing for the people who risked their lives at the WTC. It's not a manner of money; it's a matter of doing the right thing for people who sacrificed so much. If my tax bill goes up a little bit as a result, I'm fine with that. I wish I could do more.

28. You do understand that 9/11 was an attack on the U.S., not just NYC, don't you?
Just as the Federal goverment paid the medical bills of the civilians injured at Pearl Harbor, it owes these responders the same consideration - we all owe them that.

What shames me is that all the Republicans in Minnesota's Congressional delegation voted against this. My rep, Erik Paulsen, claims that there is already "plenty of money" going to this. Like you, he apparently thinks the responders health care needs can be met by the donations St. Paul's Chapel collects for them from tourists.

23. Interesting that you agree w/Bachmann. I just hope you're never
in a position where you've done something exceptionally heroic and need support and basic compassion because of your actions, but somehow, I doubt that would ever happen. :eyes:

21. I can easily picture her screaming for the firemen if she's in a fire
and upon seeing one she would instantly jump on his back screeching to be saved immediately, which the firefighter might find difficult as she's got one leg around his waist and one hooked over his shoulder digging her high heal into his ribs while she has him in a deadly head lock with one arm and choking him with the other. Her eyes are rolled way back in her head too.

I really picture this.
