Barton statement on Affordable Care Act
Published: Thursday, March 24, 2011 11:42 AM CDT
WASHINGTON — Rep. Joe Barton (R-Ennis/Arlington), Chairman Emeritus and senior Republican on the Energy and Commerce Committee issued the following statement regarding the first anniversary of Obamacare:

“It’s been exactly one year since President Obama signed into law the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The bill, which radically changes the healthcare system in our country, was forced through both Houses of Congress by a Democrat majority that refused to listen to the American people. Republicans tried to recommend solutions and alternatives, but then-Speaker Pelosi and her Democratic colleagues chose to ignore us.

“We learn new truths about Obamacare every day: Over 1000 waivers to roughly 6.2 million people and businesses have been given out, business owners now have to file a 1099 form with the IRS for all purchases made over $600, elective abortions are now being paid for with tax payer dollars, the legislation contains $550 billion in new taxes, and after 10 years, the debt held by American citizens will reach to $753 billion dollars. In addition to all of this, the CBO estimates that Obamacare carries a $1.4 trillion price tag. There will be an increase in premiums in both the public and private sectors. We simply cannot afford the price tag that comes with this law.

“Since winning the majority, Republicans haven’t wasted any time in trying to tackle Obamacare. On Jan. 19, the House passed H.R. 2, the Repealing the Job-Killing Health Care Law Act. A month later, several amendments were included in H.R. 1, the Full-Year Continuing Appropriations Act for FY 2011 to prevent certain provisions from being enforced by Obamacare. On March 4th, the House passed H.R. 4, which repeals the 1099 reporting requirements in Obamacare.

“Various House committees have been very proactive in holding hearings and drafting legislation to further chip away at Obamacare. As Chairman Emeritus of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, I am proud to say I have worked tirelessly with my colleagues on the committee to examine Obamacare. We have held several hearings and considered several bills relating to different provisions of this job-killing bill. We made a promise to the American people in November, and we intend on keeping that promise.”
