Bristol Palin heads to college....
Edited on Mon Dec-27-10 02:49 PM by Aviation Pro
...at the top party school of the nation - ASU. Not going to say it, nope.

Bristol Palin headed to Arizona State University?

Watch out Meghan McCain, another high-profile political daughter is apparently planning to make her home in Arizona.

Bristol Palin, daughter of onetime vice presidential candidate/conservative darling Sarah Palin and a recent "Dancing with the Stars" runner-up herself, plans to enroll at Arizona State University, according to TMZ.

On Friday, news broke that Palin bought a $172,000 five-bedroom home in Maricopa, Ariz., from a North Dakota couple in early December.

"I'm not sure why she wanted to buy that home, but we are real happy for her," previous owner Michael Smith told The Arizona Republic.

TMZ speculates that Palin chose the home because of its proximity to the Arizona State University school of broadcasting.

If true, Palin will totally outshine Maricopa's other celebrity resident (as per Wikipedia): Antony Hämäläinen: lead singer of melodic death metal band Nightrage. Though he definitely wins the "most umlauts in my last name" game.

On edit and keeping with the math motif: I wonder how she did in algebra?

Hey, maybe she'll do better than her mother and actually learn something.

I suspect that same house in Tempe would be at least 50% more than what she paid for the one in Maricopa. And, with less property around it. More bang for the buck. Probably more privacy, too.

44. Good for her. People rag on her about being paid for speaking, but no one
forces folks to pay a fee and attend.

She is ragged on for being on DWTS - but she didn't force the producers to invite her, instead, they probably thought it would be good publicity.

She had a baby as a teenager, as do many, and the 'baby daddy' was disinclined to remain - also as do many.

Now, she has money from speaking and the teevee show, has bought a house, is going to college, is raising the baby.

Good for her.

49. Suffice to say, he left. We were not there. We don't *really* know who
said or did what to whom or when. Do we? Other than hearsay?

Can't we just be reasonably happy/satisfied that a young mother is making a life for herself and her child and is self-supporting? Can't we do this without a constant stream of venom?

Can't we wish her well and hope for her success? Must we assume the worst because her mother is not popular with some factions?

I don't know about you, but I can. Good for her!

Patrick Swayze character in "Roadhouse" said, "Opinions vary."

In the instance you mentioned, it was a young woman expressing her feelings about people who don't like her mother. Other people at other times have probably taken offense at something that was said about their own mothers.

118. Hold up. Bristol has NOT been accepted at ASU
http://theimmoralminority.blogspot.com/2010/12/unlikeliest-rumor-about-bristols-move.html

<snip>

So TMZ.com reported that Bristol was "telling friends" that she may enroll at an Arizona college. And because Maricopa is "just miles" from the Cronkite School, the website connected the dots and reported that Bristol would soon be a Sun Devil.

The problem, of course, is that it was never the case.

"She is not a student. She hasn't applied. It is pure fiction," the dean of the Cronkite School, Chris Callahan, said Tuesday morning. "If anybody had called and asked me that, we would have been glad to tell them."

Of all of the rumors swirling about this home purchase (And seriously when was the last time you saw so much speculation?), THIS one was the least believable.

Let's face it, the Palins do not work hard nor study hard. Bristol would be more likely to start smuggling illegals over the border than to start attending a real a college, that expected you to show up to class and study hard to pass the classes, and where her mother could not buy her diploma for her.

<snip>

peculiar.

Good for the Cronkite School for doing their level best to quash the rumors--and note the overwhelming IRONY of it...

86. Haters gotta hate. Haters GONNA hate. It's what they do best, if given the chance.
Glad that not a single hater here has a family member who had a child out of wedlock, or fathered one. I mean, it HAS to be that way since so many here are judging her for just that. That's all you got? That and a statement she made about people who hate her mom? Please...

Like I said, haters GOTTA hate, haters GONNA hate. It's what gets done here more than any other message board I've ever seen. Don't tell me about freeper central, I've never seen it and don't plan to go there any time soon.

Everyone here who made a shitty statement about her without being personally acquainted with her is sad and pathetic.

Personally I wish her all the luck in the fucking world.

How many different reasons have I seen DUers hate individuals or groups of people?

We hate because of

the car people drive
the size of their paycheck
the size of their house
the part of the United States they live in
their choice of what to eat
who they may be related to through no fault of their own
their chosen profession
their religious beliefs
a thousand other things that escape me at the moment.

It worries me that so many are so filled with such abject hatred that news a young person is going to continue their education instantly turns into just another hatred filled bonfire.

Be proud haters, be very proud. You represent the very best American society has to offer. Not.

109. When I was in high school ...
... there was a guy who came in to talk to the classes about drug use. That was his "job," as well as part of a probationary agreement, I think.

Now, regardless of whatever your personal feelings are with regards to drug use, who do you think is better qualified to talk to high school-aged kids about drug use: some straight-laced authoritarian teacher/shrink who has never even seen a joint in his life, or a guy who knows exactly what it's like to hit rock bottom with a needle in his arm in some back alley somewhere?

Personally, I go for the latter.

Edited on Tue Dec-28-10 11:04 AM by Confusious
Her mother was Governor of Alaska.

Things seem to be working out for her. What does she know?

And now that I think about it, it was even worse then that. She was lecturing people on abstinence. I don't pay much attention, so I only catch the highlights.

You don't get a baby through abstinence, so again, what would she know?

111. Neither her baby's age nor her mother's place in government
have any bearing whatsoever upon her qualification to speak to youths about not getting pregnant in high school. Those are completely irrelevant here.

What does she know? She knows, after learning the hard way, that getting knocked up in high school is a pretty damned bad idea. Why on earth would anyone think that she would somehow not be the MOST qualified person to discuss such a topic? Good grief. I can't count the numbers of different convicts who, as a part of their sentence, go around and educate others on how NOT to become a convict like themselves. Should Michael Vick not be qualified to go around and tell people not to beat the shit out of dogs? I still think the guy is an asshole, but I already don't beat dogs. Still, he knows that lifestyle far batter than I do, so he is much more qualified than I am to go around telling people to not beat the shit out of dogs.

See? You've got a double-standard at work here. If Bristol Palin, through her own bitter experience, is somehow disqualified from educating others from her own mistakes, then you're going to have to apply that standard to a whole lot of people I don't think you want to apply that to. Just think for a minute what that would mean. Over the years there have been tons of folks like Hollywood actors who have been drunks and/or addicts who have later gone on education campaigns to try to keep others from living their mistakes. Taken to the extreme, your "well, they failed at it so what do they know?" line of reasoning would say that people like breast cancer survivors have no business going out and talking to others about breast cancer prevention. After all, they got breast cancer, so obviously they don't know anything about prevention, right?

See where that goes? Not a very sound line of reasoning there.

As I noted above, I don't care about the Palin family. What they do is their business as far as I'm concerned. Sarah Palin is just as entitled to her free speech to advocate her politics, warped as they may be, as anyone here is entitled to advocate their own politics. That's what the First Amendment is for. Bristol Palin, AFAIC, is a politician's kid, and I try to generally just keep a hands-off approach to all politicians' kids. I don't want some Freeper bashing Sasha or Malia, and I thought it was especially shitty when that was done to Chelsea Clinton, so I intentionally do not go down in the muck when it comes to someone like Bristol Palin.

Edited on Tue Dec-28-10 03:14 PM by Confusious
Is that I have doubts about her ability to keep to abstinence. She is the child of a republican, after all.

Besides that, abstinence has also been shown to be a complete line of bull. Better to teach about birth control.

I probably should have started out with this, but what really bothered me about it didn't become clear until now.

108. Amen!
For an entire family that is so completely irrelevant, they sure do get a whole lot of focus around here.

Personally, I try to go out of my way to never harbor any sort of ill will towards anyone, or indeed to even dwell on anyone for any extended period of time unless there is some personal relationship there. I'd prefer to focus my energy on my wife and family rather than what some unfortunate teenage statistic is doing going to college.

89. For a bit of perspective
Maricopa is 40 miles south of Tempe, (Where ASU is located) and is just an exburb for the East Valley of Phx. 15 years ago it was open desert with a few trailers and road side bars. It is off I-10 which connects Phx and Tucson. To drive the 40 miles she would need to give herself one hour to get to campus. The campus has about 40k students, many live on or near campus, many others commute. Parking is a nightmare if you are a commuter so she would have to add 20 to 30 minutes to park and get to class. For the months of August, September, April and May the temps are over 100.

Campus is very large, as you could imagine, and your first two years you spend a lot of time walking across campus to get to classes. (Once you are focused on your major you end up with classes in a very contained area.

So she would end up spending two to three hours per day commuting and walking around in the heat, I hate to be a pessimist but I say no friggen way is this a workable solution for her.

FYI, Maricopa is a town in Pinal County, Tempe/Phx are in Maricopa County, Sheriff Joe is from Maricopa County, Pinal County has another DoucheNozzle as their Sheriff.

Also, in my twenty plus years in Arizona I can safely say I did only one thing in Pinal County and that is to pull over and piss.
