indeed it is insane to raise the debt ceiling.
INSANE.

It is only going to hurt the future of our country, in the long run.

But to avoid raising the debt ceiling only by cutting non-defense spending programs, and by decimating the spending power of the classes with no political power will hurt even more.

The weak economy needs more government spending, and given our balance sheets, that demands more taxes for the rich. It is obvious.

I only wish someone would put me in charge. I could fix things.

Alas, I'm only a peon.

Smarter than them, but still a peon.

1. debt ceiling is a red herring
it is in the budget process that spending is raised or cut...the debt ceiling has nothing to do with it. it's only an acknowledgment that they are spending more than they are taking in.

refusing to raise the debt ceiling is like refusing to pay your bills after you already bought something. only in this situation, it is the government of the USA refusing to pay its bills, which would result in chaos. if you think the financial meltdown in 2008 was bad...this would result in stock and bond market crashes like the world has never known. it is an unthinkable idea.

not raising the debt ceiling is insane. if you want to cut spending, then cut it before you spend it, not after the bills come due.

2. Republicans do not want to cut spending, they just want to redirect it.
They wat to spend just as much or more so but only on projects that benefit their base, (the haves and the have mores) They want to give money to the wealthy while cutting it from society as a whole.
