The saddest are the "sacrificial" dogs--non-fighting breeds that they put out to be used as bait and often killed in training. Those could come from just about anywhere. Given the parts of the country that dog-fighting is most popular, there tend to be stray dog issues as well. It is horrendous.

for this very reason. Especially smaller breeds. Dogs, and cats too, get stolen all the time to be used as "bait" to teach the fighting dogs how to kill.

Anyone who supports or excuses dogfighting is also supporting or excusing the brutal killings of beloved family pets. It happens a lot more than most people think.

When I was looking for my lost dog (he's safe at home now) in a bad neighborhood, a young boy told me to look in the canal yards away. He said dogs are picked up by a gang to use in dog fights, & when the dogs can't fight anymore, they were tossed into the canal.

If there was one in place & everyone knew it was in place, those who find the pets would know to take them there so that the owners could be found. I went to every shelter within 30 miles of my home.

He was picked up by a college student on the interstate on a cold, rainy day on a Tuesday. She put an ad in the Saturday edition of the newspaper & I saw it, called her, & we met at the mall.

I spent the entire week frantically searching every street where he was lost; when I talked to the girl on the phone, she told me the only two things he would eat were cheese & bacon! That's my dog -- laying on a stranger's couch, living it up on bacon & cheese!

I get so sad when I see Lost Pet flyers in my neighborhood. A lot of those dogs and cats never get home. The best-case scenario, of course, is that they wind up in a home somewhere else...but sadly that's not the most common case. Most of the time, the owners never know what happened.

A quick death being hit by a car is, unfortunately, NOT the worst-case scenario.

We had a $75 're-homing' fee that covered neutering and microchips.

That protected the animals from dog fighting rings, but not from 'scientific research' labs.

We found out they were paying $100+ per animal from 'private contractors' ie - ppl who adopt from rescue groups and sell to them.

The Humane Societies will not release animals to them anymore, they needed a 'front'.

I have heard horror stories of dogs being stolen and then having their legs broken so they can't defend themselves from the fighting dogs that are then set loose to kill them



or if they don't break their legs they will muzzle them so they can't bite back, or chain their heads/necks to something so they can't move


The idea is to teach the pit bulls to kill every dog they come in contact with. They will even keep the dogs caged just out of reach of another dog when they are young. This kinda drives them crazy because they are constantly trying to make contact with another of their kind but never can. I don't understand all of it and I shy away from the stories I hear so I am sure there is more to it than I am aware of.

The real monsters, the horrible evil people that make it a business and run a kennel? Oh, that goes way back. Established fighting kennels are well documented, and an up and coming dogfighter will check the lines of the gameness of the sire and the bitch, and pay a premium to have that "pedigree" and reputation.

The bait? Those poor animals come from anywhere. The shelter, side of the road, neighbor...the monsters of dogfighting don't care about who is hurt in addition to the dogs they maim and kill.

And if there is a Hell, there's a real sweet spot for them there.

the bait dogs are usually stolen, purchased cheaply and untracably or the unfavorable dogs from the extensive litters are used. There are entire networks of backyard breeders that breed dogs most specifically to be used in fighting though that's the extent of the breeders' participation. Their motivation is the good supplemental income, and unfortunately, it's legal.
