Elton John and his partner have become parents
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-12084650

Sir Elton John and his partner have become parents to a son born to a surrogate mother in California.

Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John was born on Christmas Day, the UK musician and his Canadian husband David Furnish told the Usmagazine.com website.

"Zachary is healthy and doing really well, and we are very proud and happy parents," said the couple.

8. great...happy for them, but
why is it that adoption and surrogacy are so freaking expensive for average people? I am childless not by choice and would love to have a child, but I can't afford the exhorbitant amounts of money one needs for an adoption or surrogacy here in the U.S. My employer does not provide adoption assistance either.

And, before some of you say "Why Don't You Adopt Through the Foster Care System?" well, that would be great, except that here in NC they won't even let you take their required classes (which, by the way, are offered during the day when I'm at work) until and unless you are single (NOT cohabitating) or have been married for more than 1 year.

Surrogacy is even worse, between the medical treatments and the expense for the surrogate.

It would be nice to reduce the costs, requirements and entanglements of adoption so that more people could take advantage of it... There are so many kids who need parents.
