Vick Anti-Rant. Americans care more about pets than people.
Edited on Tue Dec-28-10 02:38 PM by denem
A homeless person with a dog will get a far more positive response than two homeless people.

Bad things happen to bad people. Pets are innocent angels.

Yes, the law knows the difference - Murder vs. Animal Cruelty.

But an sad, wrenching antimal story has such universal appeal
much more so than another human being thrown on the scrap heap.

This is not about Mr Vick
Remember: Pets are so cute.
LOL cats
DOA vets.
DEAD civilians.

5. How 'bout you offer an opinion on another topic? Say, DADT
(Don't Ask, Don't Tell). Google it, it was in the news a big bunch recently.

Some who advocate for animals don't seem to like humans. One even sees statements to that effect.

If one lacks compassion for humans, having compassion for animals is pretty meaningless.

9. How many soldiers died today in Iraq/Afghanistan?
How many families are suffering thru winter cold because they can't afford to pay their heating bills or even worse - they have no home.

I'm so glad we're focusing on this Vick issue even though it wasn't even the reason why Obama called Eagles owner Jeff Lurie in the first place. (and the reason he did is for something that could have a huge impact on our environment but who cares about that since Obama mentioned Vick's name :eyes: )

11. I wrote this yesterday

I saw a movie (back in the late 1980s) that confirms the reactions of some here: people care more about animals than people. I care about animals, too. But not more than people.

The movie was called "Night Zoo," by the Canadian filmmaker Jean-Claude Lauzon. Every conceivable sort of human depradation is shown, almost impossible for me to watch, though the audience seemed to be taking it all in stride. Finally, at the end of the film, the main character, an ex-con, accompanies his father, who is dying of cancer, to the zoo, and helps him execute his dying wish: to hunt big game. They shoot an elephant. Well, after all the murder and mayhem that preceded this scene--I mean, really grotesque stuff-- this was the event that drew massive gasps from the audience. As people walked out, all they could talk about was the poor elephant. Yes, poor elephant. But I heard not one soul talk about the poor people in this film. It just gobsmacked me.

Yes, poor dogs. But poor man, too. Michael Vick grew up in a public housing project where he lived amidst drug-dealing, drive-by shootings, murder, and financial deprivation. He got a chance through sports, but he never really shook off the culture in which he grew up. He made poor judgments. He went to prison. Just as we would give those dogs a second chance, give the man a second chance. The same chance you'd give an animal, at least.

12. Well, let me put it this way...
I've never once been fucked over by a pet.

Never once had my heart broken by a pet except when it died

I care about helpless beings...pets or human.

Babies...children...the elderly...pets...animals in general.

I've had pets who were worth more than ten certain individuals.

That's just how it is...

Take your pick. Either is as sensible and rational as the post to which I am responding.

I happen to believe there are precise and relevant differences between the two issues, of which both may bear scrutiny and criticism.

However, I do understand your implications that many people are unwilling or incapable of holding two distinct thoughts in their heads. Mirrors are guilty of the same thing quite often...

19. Many of us care about living things, and care about
the social/emotional state of our own species, recognizing the connection inter-species relationships have to the capacity for empathy humans can encompass.
