Detroit — Federal prosecutors are refusing to reveal customers from Oakland County and the 248 area code who hired hookers from a high-priced escort service but are willing to out clients from Detroit, according to federal court records.

The legal tactic was unveiled in records filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Detroit involving the Miami Companions escort service.

The U.S. Attorney's Office and FBI busted the international escort service in July, indicted the owners and three employees on prostitution or money-laundering charges and seized a black book bulging with tens of thousands of customer names, job details and contact information.

Paul DeCailly, the attorney for Miami Companions co-owner Greg Carr, flew to Detroit last week to review the black book. He wanted to see the names of clients from Michigan and Ohio, but the U.S. Attorney's Office said he could see only the names from the 313 and 734 area codes, he said.

"There must be something there they don't want anybody to see," DeCailly said Tuesday. "In the 248 area code, a lot of influential people live there: musicians, Detroit's sports elite, politicians. ... It's the center of a lot of activity in the business community."

As someone with a 313 area code I am curious why that one isn't even mentioned.

10. The case concerns conspiracy, coercion/enticement, and conspiracy to launder money
The indictment lists no more than 40 bank deposits and lists four individuals allegedly coerced/enticed

It seems quite possible to me that the number of clients needed for prosecution does not exceed the bank deposits and that the vast majority of names in the book are completely irrelevant to the prosecution of the case: if this is correct, it might simply be the case that none of the activity prosecuted involves area code 248

11. If anybody wants to play with the demographics, here are two useful tools
http://www.allareacodes.com/michigan_area_codes.htm
http://projects.nytimes.com/census/2010/explorer?hp

This would be pretty pricey prostitution: the accused allegedly had a call center in Panama and several front corporations -- and women were supposedly flown to Michigan from Miami

I might guess the 313s or 734s were in Canton, Garden City & Inkster, or Allen Park & Southgate & Taylor

15. UPDATE: "Lawyer to get 248 area code names in escort probe"
I'm betting on some Oakland County GOPer fatcats being on the list. Folks like Patterson and Bouchard.

Lawyer to get 248 area code names in escort probe
Robert Snell / The Detroit News

Detroit— Federal prosecutors reversed course today and agreed to let a lawyer review a list of clients from the 248 area code who hired hookers from a high-priced escort service.

The move comes a day after lawyer Paul DeCailly, who represents Miami Companions escort service co-owner Greg Carr, filed a motion in U.S. District Court in Detroit accusing prosecutors of picking and choosing which Metro Detroit clients would be outed as hiring $500-per-hour prostitutes.

The U.S. Attorney's Office had said DeCailly could review names from only the 313 and 734 area codes, not 248.

The U.S. Attorney's Office sent him a letter today saying it made a mistake in blocking him from reviewing a list of clients from the 248 area code. Prosecutors also will let him view a list of customers from Macomb County and the 586 area code, he said.

The Florida-based lawyer said he will not be satisfied merely reviewing the black book under the watchful eye of an FBI agent. He will continue pushing for a copy and hopes the court will schedule a hearing on his motion soon.

"If I come up (to Michigan), I'm leaving with a copy," he said. "If there is a hearing, I'll be asking that (the black book) be made immediately available."

20. I doubt a lot of pro athletes are paying for it.
Finding dates probably isn't the toughest part of a pro athlete's day.

21. You're right. Getting enough sleep and being in playing shape are harder
than finding someone that will bed them. If one look at photos of a live and young Wilt Chamberlain, it is easy to see that he was an attractive man. While Wilt surely did not bed 20,000 women as he claimed, one can wisely assume that his bed count was substantial.

24. Pro athletes pay all the time. It is much easier to have someone show up than to chat someone up...
and no guarantee of sex. It isn't a "date". It is sex.
