9 Surprising Reasons Why Detroit Rocks

Want an amazing urban getaway complete with great locavore cuisine, charming markets and a vibrant art scene? Look no further than Detroit, Michigan.

Detroit might be better known for its bad luck–from its faltering auto industry to crumbling downtown architecture–but the once mighty Motor City is in “reset” mode. Idealistic citizens and entrepreneurs, downtown farmers, independent artists, as well as big-ticket investment in city infrastructure and attractions, have resulted in a mid-transition city with much to offer weekend visitors.

Here are some amazing Detroit attractions you won’t want to miss.

WOW! As a resident, all I can say is... this is what I have been talking about. People don't know how cool Detroit really is.

I go there probably about twice a month -- more in the summer.

5. very vegan and vegetarian-friendly
Be sure to also check out brunch hotspot Russell St. Deli. This vegan- and vegetarian-friendly eatery serves up deli and all-day-breakfast faves with an emphasis on locally sourced, organic and free-range (meat) ingredients.

vegan-friendly free-range meat.

6. I was raised in Jackson, Michigan from the age of 6 'til 17...
.
.
.
...and I knew THAT town to be the Coney Island Hot Dog center of the Universe.
.
.
.
Didn't find out 'til MUCH later that beef heart was the crucial "secret" ingredient
(I'm still in deep denial now about that -- and could STILL eat half-a-dozen at a
setting DESPITE that essential, you know... whatever it was that I can't remember
right now).
.
A freakin' TON-and-a-half of finely chopped yellow onion, a good smear of THIN
yellow mustard, both atop a healthy ladle of coney (not chili) sauce covering the
dog and bun.
.
.
I once made a one-hour (EACH way) diversion about a quarter of the way through a
20-hour drive (in my more chemically adventurous days) JUST because of those hot
dogs. Unfortunately, BOTH the 24/7 downtown joints had decided years before to
close on Sundays.
.
.
I'm STILL HONGRY from that disappointing sidetrip.
.
.
.
If I were stranded on a desert island and could have but one item to eat during
many years of castaway status, it might very well be those hot dogs. On that
diet, my life might have been very short, but it DEFINITELY would not have been
miserable.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
At least not at dinnertime.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Did I convey the impression that I like Jackson Michigan Coney Island Hot Dogs?
.
.
.
The image below is the closest I could find to what I remember -- except this
seems to be about half the onions used back then. Definitely not first-date food.

9. I really enjoyed this link.
I was able to read about my former home in Detroit and my present home in Maine. I've enjoyed many of the place written about in both states. Detroit will always be "home" no matter where I now live.

10. nice article
but the riverwalk should have been included. it is awesome!

there should also be a warning regarding the dueling coney island restaurants - DO NOT use the bathrooms! *shudder* to call them disgusting would be an understatement.
