Couple's late son was secret sperm donor for lesbian aunt, making them grandparents

A young British scaffolder who died last year secretly donated sperm to enable his lesbian aunt and her partner to have two youngsters, leaving his stunned parents to discover they had grandchildren.

Charlie Lowden died last year at 20 following routine surgery. It was only then that the complicated family history - and the paternity of the two children - became known, London's Daily Mail said.

The Mail said that Charlie's parents, Charles and Lynn Lowden of Bedlington, in Northumberland, had always thought Carlton, five, and Sarah, two, were their nephew and niece. They were born to Lynn's sister, Sarah Ashman, and her partner, Claire.

"When our Charlie died we were brokenhearted," the Mail quoted Lynn as saying. "We thought we had nothing left of him. But there is something left of him.

"I just wish that we had known about all of this before he died so that Charlie could have known we had accepted it."

1. Wait, WHAT?
He donated sperm to his AUNT? So either he had a kid with his mother's sister or his father sister?

Isn't that like test-tube incest?

I guess it's good he had kids before he died, and he could help them out like that, but that's kind of creepy. Are the kids OK?

3. Could it have been donated to the female wife of his biological aunt?
If I have a nephew who is my brother's son, my wife has a nephew who is not a blood relative.

I was wondering that, also. It turns out the actual donor recipient was the aunt's partner.
So, it should be okay, genetically speaking.

29. I wonder how the "donation" was carried out
I doubt if a clinic would knowingly use the sperm of a 14 year old. Perhaps the deed was accomplished in the old fashioned way.

5. Was his aunt the recipient, or was it her partner?. . .
It would make quite a difference in the "incest" pool. . .

6. his sperm, but not necessarily the aunt's ova
the ova could be donor or from the partner.

Apparently all went well the first time since they did it a second time!

11. She's his own grandmother :P
(cough - Hit it, Maestro!)

Many, many years ago when I was twenty-three
I was married to a widow who was pretty as could be.
This widow had a grown-up daughter who had hair of red.
My father fell in love with her and soon they, too, were wed.

This made my dad my son-in-law and changed my very life
For my daughter was my mother, 'cause she was my father's wife.
To complicate the matter, even though it brought me joy
I soon became the father of a bouncing baby boy.

My little baby then became a brother-in-law to dad
And so became my uncle, though it made me very sad
For if he was my uncle, then that also made him brother
To the widow's grown-up daughter, who, of course, was my step-mother.

My father's wife then had a son who kept them on the run
And he became my grand-child, 'cause he was my daughter's son.
My wife is now my mother's mother, and it makes me blue
Because, although she is my wife, she's my grandmother too.

If my wife is my grandmother, then I am her grandchild
And every time I think of it, it nearly drives me wild
For now I have become the strangest case you ever saw
(This has got to be the strangest thing I ever saw)
As husband of my grandmother, I am my own grandpaw.

Chorus
I'm my own grandpaw
I'm my own grandpaw
It sounds funny I know
but it really is so
Oh, I'm my own grandpaw.

13. He died last year at age 20.
His biological children are 5 and 2.

Should teens be sperm donors without the knowledge of their parents?

At 14 or 15 when he donated the first time, I'm sure they would have been creeped out..:eyes:

23. Test-tube incest
Even though it appears to be genetically just fine, I hope someone gets a good novelty song out of it. "I'm My Own Grampaw" and "Uncle Fud" are kind of showing their age.

Sounds like a job for Jonathan Coulton.

Weird, sure--but mostly sweet and sad.

(Teenage boys normally produce a great deal of sperm, I believe, most of which goes into old socks and Kleenex.)

31. The family (pictures)

Lasting gift: Charlie Lowden (left) donated sperm to his aunt, Sarah Ashman (above, left) and her partner, Claire, who gave birth to Carlton and Sarah

The Grandparents

Charlie died on December 9 last year after he suffered severe chest pains and began vomiting blood just days after a hernia operation at Hexham General Hospital. His parents are taking legal action.

Sarah added:'His death has totally broken all of us. It's just shattered the whole family.'
