Stem Cell Transplant Cures HIV In 'Berlin Patient'
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/12/14/hiv-cure-berlin-patient_n_796521.html

'Doctors believe an HIV-positive man who underwent a stem cell transplant has been cured as a result of the procedure.

Timothy Ray Brown, also known as the "Berlin Patient," received the transplant in 2007 as part of a lengthy treatment course for leukemia. His doctors recently published a report in the journal Blood affirming that the results of extensive testing "strongly suggest that cure of HIV infection has been achieved."

Brown's case paves a path for constructing a permanent cure for HIV through genetically-engineered stem cells.'

2. Very Interesting
but I can't help to think what the right wingers would say. A disease that they equate with gay people (who they hate), cured by (what they think at least) killing babies.

3. I read through the article...
and couldn't find a reference to adult vs embryonic stem cells. I did notice that he underwent the Leukemia treatments in 2007 which made me think adult stems cells. But then I noticed, this was the "Berlin" man - University Medicine Berlin, German - and not having any idea of German policy on stem cell experimentation in 2007, I gave up guessing.

Did you see anything I missed in the article that made you assume embryonic stem cells?

6. It doesnt matter what the article says
you know many people in this country, if they even know what they are, think that stem cells only come from aborted fetuses.

5. This article says he received the stem cells from a donor-->ADULT stem cells
It is Fox news though

http://www.foxnews.com/health/2010/12/14/doctors-claim-hiv-positive-man-cured-stem-cell-transplant/

"he received a transplant of stem cells from a donor carrying a rare, inherited gene mutation that seems to make carriers virtually immune to HIV infection."

4. More stem cell news...
http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2010/dec/05/ms-activating-stem-cells-brain

MS could be reversed by activating stem cells in brain, new study suggests
Stem cells have been stimulated to regenerate the myelin sheath that is damaged in multiple sclerosis (MS)
