Matthews: ‘Democrats Don’t Want to Stop Illegal Immigration’
http://canadafreepress.com/index.php/article/31570

Dyed-in-the-wool liberal Chris Matthews who thinks the Republicans are BS’ing the country about deporting illegals a plan he says will never happen is also skeptical that Democrats really want to address the problem.

This what Matthews told his guests;

“Neither side has offered a compromise proposal which would actually become law, which would deal with the problem” … while “The Democrats on the other hand have been pretty much weak in stating exactly how they’re going to stop illegal immigration, I don’t hear them giving me a clarity as to how they are going to prevent the continued flow of illegal people coming into the country, I don’t even think they want to stop it, that’s my belief so far, they like it.”

Richard Wolffe an MSNBC political analyst then answered Matthews by spouting the numbers of deportations and employer raids conducted by the Obama administration and said that they wanted to look tough on enforcement because they thought it would buy them something with Republicans which it didn’t.

Except for the fact that Matthews finished by calling for the type of immigration reform championed by Chuck Schumer, Lindsey Graham, and even the late Ted Kennedy he almost sounded like some of his competitors on Fox News.

3. NOBODY wants to stop it.
The fact is, undocumented workers are a source of cheap labor. If that number is in the millions, as is currently the case, it brings down the overall wages of the country.

5. Nobody with political power.
Illegal aliens are a scourge - they should all be deported at their illegal employers' expense. Then the illegal employers should pay an extra chunk of change as a purely punitive measure - these funds should be used to deport all non-employed illegal aliens. But those with political power (read: those with money who make bank off of illegal labor) have no interest in doing the right thing. They're only in it for the money.

12. I agree with your Subject LIne
but there are better ways of dealing with the issue. The most obvious is to stop the insane War on Drugs. It fuels the Mexican cartels which have further destabilized Mexico making it a very dangerous place in which to live. People stay where they are when they have safety, a working justice system and a stable government. I do agree that employers need to be held responsible for hiring undocumented workers (below the going rate) by way of stiff fines and other penalties.

6. Cheap Labor pays no heed...
Unacceptable yes...but people want cheap vegetables and their burgers flipped and pools cleaned...if the jobs weren't there, the "illegals" wouldn't either. While Democrats wrestle with how to deal with this, the GOTB are total hypocriates as they gin up the anti-Hispanic rhetoric (the racists that they are) while the big money contributors gladly welcome as much cheap labor as will come across. Fine employers $10,000 an "illegal" a day and we'll see this issue fade in a hurry...

9. I'm All For It...
I've long stated to fine those who willingly employ "illegals" (translation: someone whose been caught doing so in the past) $10,000 per "illegal" per day and force them to pay (none of this defered bullshit) and I'd bet a bright shiny dime the issue would fade away. What's most interesting is that the influx of "illegals" has been down over the past couple years as there aren't the jobs here there once was...yet the GOTB continue to make an issue of it. It's their new "tar baby"...playing to their racist base.

11. It's Been The Rushpublican Mantra Since 1968...
with the "Southern Strategy". This issue has been manufactured...ginned up to energize white voters in western states in specific as well as in the "rust belt" where many Hispanics have moved. It's outright racism as you rarely hear about the problems with "illegal" immigration of other groups. The resentment of Hispanics in those areas have a long history and are being exploited by the GOTB since it's been a winning strategy. They can't demonize blacks like they used to and they've lost in their battle to disenfanchise "Teh Gay", so it's onto Hispanics.

Cheers...

17. Fining means that you tie up resources
while those hiring illegals will fight them, and the agency or entity levying the fine will have a higher burden of proof to meet.

There's a better idea: Just disallow deductions on business income tax returns for any wages not accompanied by an e-Verify form for each employee. It shoves the burden of proof onto the employer, and doesn't affect law-abiding citizens and businesses.

8. I was speaking in political/economic terms.
Just another in a long list of atrocities the Power Elite has committed against the populace -- all in the name of accumulating more and more and more. It's a very old story.

something neither party wants.

14. "Enforcement only" is a repub tactic. Congressional Progressive Causus' position is:
Immigration reform is central to the CPC’s mission and has long been a top priority for our members. Therefore, we urge you to consider the following principles and look forward to working with you to ensure that they are part of any comprehensive reform:

• Allowing immigrants currently in the United States a pathway to seek earned legal status and citizenship;
• Protecting workers;
• Improving temporary worker programs to better meet the needs of employers and workers;
• Promoting family reunification by alleviating backlogs and waiting periods;
• Eliminating discrimination against same-sex partners and their families;
• Expanding alternatives to detention and creating enforceable detention standards;
• Guaranteeing humane enforcement of immigration law that respects the needs of vulnerable populations, including children and seniors;
• Ensuring immigrant access to higher education;
• Instituting due process reforms; and
• Ending racial profiling abuses through strict statistical reporting.

These enforcement-only approaches are unworkable in reality and often have a pernicious effect on vulnerable immigrant communities. The problems with our broken immigration system cannot simply be enforced away, nor can they be solved at the state level. Immigration is inherently a Federal issue and only Congress can pass comprehensive reform, which is the only way to truly secure our borders. A comprehensive solution would deter illegal immigration, ensure effective and humane enforcement and promote legal immigration that will protect and fortify our nation’s economic and national security.

"Senator Orrin Hatch Releases An Enforcement Only Immigration Bill"

http://ndn.org/blog/2010/09/senator-orin-hatch-releases-enforcement-only-immigration-bill

GOP Senator Orin Hatch released an enforcement only immigration bill yesterday.

Hatch’s bill, Strengthening Our Commitment to Legal Immigration and America’s Security Act, would require participation in key law enforcement programs, clamp down on identify theft, streamline our visa system, track the amount of welfare benefits being diverted to illegal immigrant households, curb serious abuses of our immigration laws and help prevent Mexican cartels from using our national parks and federal lands to grow marijuana and other illegal drugs.

There is virtually nothing in the legislation other then enforcement measures, such as 287 G and Secure Communities.

16. I would argue it starts with enforcement of hiring practices
Of course, you do not let people starve or be denied medical treatment. But it would put into place a climate where legal immigration can be addressed and promoted.

But until these illegal hiring practices are dealt with, progress will not be coming.

... whatsoever in stopping illegal immigration, but both for different reasons.

Once again Americans, you are on your own. What is good for you is NOT the concern of congress.
