Doctor Strangled By Necklace Caught In Massager
Doctor Strangled By Necklace Caught In Massager
Woman Found Dead On Christmas Eve

PARKLAND, Fla. -- A South Florida doctor has died after authorities say she was accidentally strangled by a electronic neck massager on Christmas Eve.

Kenneth Gegerson called 911 after finding his wife's body on the bedroom floor next to the neck massager. Paramedics pronounced 37-year-old Michelle Ferrari-Gegerson dead at the scene.

Authorities believe her necklace got caught in the massager and it quickly tightened around her neck.

According to Broward Sheriff's authorities, Ferrari-Gegerson spent the evening wrapping gifts and getting ready for work while using the massager to relieve neck pain.

There's got to be more to this story. Is some loon trying to pitch a script to CSI-Parkland?

8. tragic, but the kind of scenario that would have opened Six Feet Under...
some years ago when that show was on (that I loved).... For the non-initiated, Six Feet Under always started off with a fairly bizarre death. There were some particularly memorable ones.

But, I have to say, what an incredible waste. Tragic.

11. 6 Feet Under
Great show - Best final Season and, BY FAR, the BEST Series Finale EVER!!!!!!!!

The last show and the epic epilogue of the deaths of all characters was the most amazing bit of TV that I may have ever seen.

4. Wait...people actually use those on their necks?
Pretty tragic and unlikely way to die though.

5. If it "quickly tightened" around my neck...
I would "quickly unplug" the damned thing (if at all possible, of course). I just don't understand how someone (and especially a doctor) couldn't have prevented death by strangulation.

7. what would unplugging it do?
If it somehow got sucked into the machine in order to tighten around her neck how does stopping the machine untighten it? It's not like unplugging it would spit the necklace back out. Actually, maybe stopping it could have made it worse since if it remained on continuing to suck in the necklace that tension might have broken the necklace.

Also, she may have fallen asleep and the necklace tightened around her neck enough to cut off her airway and she passed out and died before ever waking. People have been known to die of asphyxiation in similar ways.

That said, I find the story rather implausible. If the machine somehow grabbed the necklace causing it to tighten and asphyxiate her to death, how is it that she was found disengaged from the machine and they're apparently only guessing that this is what happened.

9. 1) who massages their neck wearing pearls?
2) wouldn't the strand break after a certain amount of forces was applied to it? (maybe they were linked with fishing line?)

3) like someone else said in this thread, couldn't she just unplug it? When strangulated, people don't die in a matter of seconds like in the movies. It takes a long time to die strangulation.

4) when a person is strangulated by a person, a particular bone is broken in the neck area (I forget it's name). Check to see if this was strangulation or asphyxiation. Big difference.

10. I'll bet this one shows up on Dr. G's show!
Dr. G (Dr. Jan C. Garavaglia) is Chief Medical Examiner for Orange and Osceola counties in central Florida. She has a show on Discovery Health Channel and often has odd deaths. Though that channel is being taken over by Oprah's new channel - I don't know what is going to happen to the shows that have been mostly shown on the Health Channel.
