Former Neo-Nazi leader steals the sign at Auschwitz
Auschwitz sign theft: Swedish man jailed

A Polish judge has jailed a Swedish man for two years and eight months for plotting the theft of the "Arbeit macht frei" Auschwitz entrance sign.

Anders Hoegstroem, a former neo-Nazi leader, admitted theft under a plea bargain last month and will be moved to Sweden to serve his sentence.

The infamous sign was stolen in December last year and recovered in three pieces three days later...

The 5m (16ft) wrought-iron slogan which translates as "Work sets you free" is a potent symbol of many of the Nazi-era atrocities. During the Nazi Holocaust, 1.1 million people - most of them Jews - were murdered at Auschwitz.

I thought six million Jews died as a result of the Nazi regime. Did the other Jewish people die at other camps?

1. Yes, the other Jews who were killed died at other camps
There were a LOT of concentration camps throughout Europe. There were half a dozen or so just around the Riga area of Latvia. Those sent to those camps had among the lowest survival rate.

3. There were literally hundreds of camps.
Auschwitz, Dachau, Treblinka, Bergen-Belsen were some of the most infamous.

Better list here

5. That list is a good starting point, but there were many more as you noted.
Many of the camps had satellite camps, etc.

9. Although I'm pretty sure enough people have already read this...
I'd still like to discuss "satellite camps."

6. There were 7 camps specifically for killing Jews in Poland alone.
And, others in what are now Serbia, Belarus, Ukraine, and Croatia.

12. Approximately 4 million Jews were massacred in the concentration
camp system (which included the exclusively extermination camps). Another 1.5 - 2 million were murdered up close and personal by firing squads, etc. carried out by the Einsaztgruppen, a SS organization whose sole task was to follow the Army into conquered territories and render them judenfrei (Jew free). While there are quite extensive records of about half of the Jews murdered in the concentration camps (the Germans being fine record keepers), those who perished at the hands of the flying execution squads throughout Eastern Europe exist only in the memory of those of us who lost them.
