Good for something: TSA scanner finds passenger's meth
Good for something: TSA scanner finds passenger's meth

Rhonda Renee Simmons is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 12 on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance after police say she got caught with about a gram of methamphetamine in her pocket Tuesday night at the Boise Airport.

Police were called to assist Boise Airport screeners with the federal Transportation Security Administration around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Police were told the 47-year-old Simmons went through the advanced imaging technology scanners at airport security when TSA employees detected an undisclosed "anomaly" in Simmons’ clothes, according to TSA reports.

When a TSA employee asked Simmons if anything was in her pockets, she pulled out a small baggie containing what was later determined to be the drug, according to police reports.

Simmons was then arrested and booked into the Ada County Jail. She was released Wednesday afternoon after posting a $5,000 bond, records say.

1. That will probably run into some 4th amendment hurdles if they try to introduce the scan
So watch for a plea deal in this one so they can avoid that fight...

2. I doubt that the 4th will even be raised
The government's position has long been that such searches are 'reasonable', why would they back away from that contention now?

What was stupid was trying to carry the drug past a known screening checkpoint. Even thought the Paul Blarts that make up the TSA are the 21st Century version of the Keystone Kops, every once in awhile, a blind pig finds a truffle.

3. They're called "reasonable" for security purposes
That's different from claiming they're reasonable as a way of collecting criminal evidence. I seem to recall a case where somebody had his cocaine located during a (pre-9/11 I think) airport security search, and got it excluded in his court case.

7. But how could they possibly introduce the scan?
We were all assured that the TSA doesn't even have the capability to record or save these scans. Right?

LOL

meth use DOES make you stupid -- or perhaps she was stupid before, hence, the meth use. As a child of the 60's who grew up with "better living through chemistry" and didn't shy away from experimentation with all kinds of controlled substances, *I* wouldn't touch that shit. Borrowing from Neil Young: "I've seen the crack pipe and the damage done."

10. Not the role of government or airline security as far as I'm concerned so good is subjective.

11. Good? I suppose if you have stock in the prison industrial complex as
they will have another "client" filling one of their cells for many years to come.

Un-reccing for support of the PIC.
