This has been weighing on my mind all day.
How in the literal hell can you shoot a 14 month old dog for shitty training on your part?
I grew up in the sticks, and yes, there were times you had to put an animal down. None of those cases involved a 14 month old puppy. All of them involved very sick animals that were suffering. Those instances were quite rare i might add.
So when i got home this evening, I gave my rescue Border Collie a long hug and a lot of treats, a dog that nobody wanted and was left to die. There's a ribeye on the grill and he's getting some of that as well.
Literally, shooting a dog that gets out of line doesn't make you tough; it makes you a piece of shit....
(Update: the puppy dog just wolfed down half of a small ribeye mixed with his dry food. He's presently sawing logs on the bed, but his tail wags when im nearby and that, is everything)

(28,815 posts)weighs less than 5 lbs. he hasn't learned how to hunt either and i can't even imagine what a bullet would do to his tiny body.
I used to work in a business park that was at the edge of a forested area. One day, we noticed this little dog running around the edge of the woods. Nobody could get close to her. This went on for some time, weeks. We were all setting out food for her and finally we put some food in a trap and got her that way. She was only about 3 months old according to the vet and riddled with ticks, not long for the world. My boss named her Elsa, adopted her, and she lived another 10 or more happy years in the lap of luxury.
here's the thing: somebody did that. this little dog did not run into the woods, she was put there. Why oh why are people such assholes
ETA the way people treat animals is demonstrative of their respect for all living things, including humans.

(23,344 posts)SHE WAS ALREADY ONE!! (STEAMING!) She HAD to be one to commit such an atrocity. As a child of a farm, I have put animals down--numerous times. But it was ALWAYS to alleviate their suffering when they were not going to survive anyway. I had to shoot a half-day-old calf because coyotes had gotten to it and torn it up grievously. It would not have lived much longer; thirty-five years later, it STILL tears me up.
And Noem, that steaming pile of bovine fecal waste, fucking *BRAGGED* about killing a dog that was poorly trained.

(6,940 posts)"make" is a colloquialism for "prove" I take your point - in most other contexts "make" means something closer to "bring about," and that's notwhat happened. But you and the OP are actually in agreement.

(15,182 posts)I can't tell you how many horses came to us as a last resort before euthanasia. They were deemed incorrigible and dangerous. Had been very badly treated by humans. One gray Arab was one of those. After a few years of love, training, good food, and horse buddies, he became a gentle boy. He was safe for children to work with.

(238 posts)Not kidding. In her own words, the dog was having the time of it's life chasing pheasants and the chickens. She used the phrase "the picture of joy" about it. A dog that loves its job, is trained, and wants to please it's owner, would make a wonderful hunting companion. (Hell of a lot safer than Dick Cheney, too). She forgot that 'is trained' means you have to fucking train it. It didn't even have the basic, 'here', 'sit', and 'stay' training down.
She killed it for no fucking reason, other than her own laziness and stupidity.
(I lost a lot of sleep last night, waking up angry at her. I may lose sleep over stuff, but never like that, much less anger at someone I've never met)

(28,088 posts)Always done the basic puppy training himself then gone to a pro for the training for bird hunting. He's always had really good dogs, some were better hunters than others, but they could hunt....except for Gus. Even after two weeks taining poor Gus just didn't get it. So Gus became the "house dog". Cousin said he'd take him along with the other dog to hunt once in a while, just because Gus had so much fun running around the field and clearly thought he was helping (Cuz swears he could see the other dog rolling his eyes). He assumed on those hunts they wouldn't be bringing any pheasants home.
And, when Gus' time came, just as he has done with all his dogs, cousin had the vet out to house to end things as peacefully as possible.
He was spitting tacks over Noem.

(5,203 posts)They are extremely intelligent dogs. He is my second dog, I've ever had. He was potty trained in less than a week, he's had 2 accidents in 9 years. He says I love you, yums, and mom. He licks his chops when you ask him a question and the answer is yes.
I have never trained an animal in my life, until I gave him treats and love to teach. He sits at our kitchen table and eats with manners.

(187 posts)When I was a child about 12, I was playing in the backyard and this collie-dog came up behind me and startled me. She was tame and so friendly and needing a hug. My Dad figured she was about three years old, but said, 'we must put an ad in the newspaper in case someone's looking for her'. I waited on eggshells that whole month, but no one contacted us while she became part of the family.
We went on many adventures together, and I could swear she talked to me. She was very expressive. She saw me all though my adolescence, high school, and when I was 20, she was an old lady. I met a girl and was about to get married when she died.
I must've cried for a week. She was my companion, I never thought of her as an 'animal'.
I can't imagine anyone can be so cruel, so thoughtless, never known the fulfillment of a dog as a companion, not just a tool.
Then again, Trump never had a dog, that should speak volumes!
Sometimes they find you.
Thats the case with my rescue border collie. This once former stray has turned out to be the absolute best camping dog ive ever seen (he puts himself to bed in the tent when hes tired!!!!). Tractor runs and truck rides.
He will sit and let little kids pet him wagging his tail.
At night he will put his head across my chest and go to sleep.
Hes so tuned into my routine that he knows it time to go outside after i put milk in my morning coffee!!!! Once the refrigerator door closes its on!!!

(18,670 posts)It killed the neighbor's chickens one by one and seemed to enjoy the taste of blood and killing.
Speaking on behalf of a son who suffered 150 stitches in his face from a Great Dane, I believe it was a matter of time before Noem's dog bit a child.
The problem is Noem seemed to enjoy it. Then there's the goat incident. There were more humane ways to euthanize a dog.
Don't put me in the Noem camp on this. She likely ruined the dog herself by teaching it to hunt and retrieve fowl.
NanaCat
(1,358 posts)Killing a couple of chickens can happen if you teach dogs to go after birds, but not have taught them the proper way to do it.
Doesn't mean the dog is dangerous to anyone else. It especially doesn't mean that it's okay to murder them for it, rather than trying to find a more suitable environment for the dog.
We're more civilized now. We can find alternative and humane solutions if dogs don't meet some arbitrary expectation, rather than murdering them in cold blood.
kwijybo
(238 posts)She never taught it. Its instincts are to hunt and kill. She was supposed to teach it to obey certain commands (sit, stay, here) and teach it how to deal with birds (never had a bird dog, just took care of rabbit dogs, but you learn things), modifying its instincts. She didn't. That much is obvious.
A dog's instinct is to bite, in certain circumstances. You socialize the dog to teach it its place in the pack, and it lowers the probability. Mom's Dachshund, I swear, would bark like he was going to eat you alive, run up, roll over, and wait for pets (just excited). Except for the UPS guy. His bark changed when UPS delivered, ready to eat him alive starting at the ankles. Never did figure out why. Kids were no problem, other than getting whacked by his tail. Or his butt. (He was the bestest boy). Noem's would have, unless it was given to someone who loved it, and took care of it like it should have been. The same is true about any dog.
Torchlight
(3,384 posts)Anything else is an excuse. Didn't see any indications the dog enjoyed its killing beyond the word of a woman who admittidely enjoys killing things herself.
'What do you do with a governor that likes to kill?' seems the more pertinant question.

(18,670 posts)The goat incident backs it. She seemed to enjoy killing the dog enough to put it in her book.
That's why I figured she ruined the dog by making it vicious. I still believe that dog was a walking time bomb and it was all on her though.

(3,659 posts)My father liked the dog and was offered a pup when Patches sired a brood. The pup was born in the spring of '73 when I was just six, and my father named him Prince after an unknown, diminutive, teenage musician from Minnesota (just kidding!). He was named after his dog when he was a kid. My father was insistent on him being a hunting dog and dragged me along for Prince's first hunt. We were in a wooded area with large weeds and at some point he got away from us. For the next 90 minutes we searched everywhere for him, my father occasionally admonishing me not to get lost, too.
We found him eventually, covered in burrs no less, and by that point I was on the verge of hysterics. When we got home I ran crying to my Mom begging her not to let him go hunting again. And, he never did. Nor did I. I'm sure my father was disappointed with both of us, but a scant three years later my parents were divorced and Prince moved from his outdoor pen into the house. He lived to the ripe old age of 13 1/2. To this day each year my Mom acknowledges his death on December 8 and still mourns for him, as I do.
What a fucking monster Noem is.
