Trump responds to falling crime rates in a decidedly Trumpian way

Donald Trump doesn’t want to believe that crime rates went down, which is why he said all evidence reflecting reality must be dismissed as “fake."

https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/trump-responds-falling-crime-rates-decidedly-trumpian-way-rcna150612

Despite bizarre Republican rhetoric about “skyrocketing” crime rates, all of the recent news on the issue has been quite encouraging. Axios reported a few weeks ago, for example, that the number of homicides in major American cities “is falling at its quickest pace in decades.” The report added that the United States is now “on track to see one of the lowest levels of violent crimes and homicides since President Obama was in office.”....

And what, pray tell, does Donald Trump think about the good news? Time magazine reported this week:

On the campaign trail, Trump uses crime as a cudgel, painting urban America as a savage hell-scape even though violent crime has declined in recent years, with homicides sinking 6% in 2022 and 13% in 2023, according to the FBI. When I point this out, Trump tells me he thinks the data, which is collected by state and local police departments, is rigged.

To fully appreciate how the former president approached the issue, it’s worth reading the transcript of his interview with Time’s Eric Cortellessa. The reporter noted in passing, before even asking a question, that violent crime is “going down throughout the country.”

Trump interrupted to say, “I don’t believe it.” Asked for clarification, the presumptive GOP nominee insisted that he considers the crime data to be “fake numbers.”.....

It’s a classic look at how the former president sees the world. He doesn’t want to believe that crime rates went down. Therefore, in Trump’s mind, crime rates didn’t go down.

Presented with evidence from law enforcement officials that crimes rates really did go down, the Republican did what he always does: Trump rejected the proof as “fake,” and accused those responsible for producing accurate data of being part of a conspiracy that only he understands.

It’s the Trumpian approach to reality, perfectly captured in less than a minute.

But delusional Republicans don’t even think the economy is thriving, so of course they don’t believe the crime numbers either

In 2020 we saw a spike and now both violent and property crime is down nationwide to near 60 year lows.

But it's hard to tell anyone that because social media seems to focus on crime now.

Nextdoor and Ring cameras are new. Before Ring, if there was someone checking car doors in a neighborhood, no one ever saw it. And if they found one unlocked and took something from it, no one ever heard about it before NextDoor and to a lesser extent Facebook were posting about it.

I live in a sub division with literally 0 crime. We haven't had a single crime reported in our sub division in years. Not a home break in, not a car break in, not vandalism, no porch pirates, not even a domestic issue. None, you can look at our city's crime map and go back and see literally 0 crimes in my about 80 house sub. Yet I have neighbors more vigilant than ever, because, "It's getting so bad here now." Zero crime, none, nada, zilch. You could literally leave your house unlocked and your keys in your car for years on end and have no worries in my sub division. And I've still got paranoid neighbors who think it's a crime zone riddled with incidents all the time.

The way the media bombards you with crime news has never been more extreme. One thing I notice in local news websites is national stories whose headlines present like it's local in regards to crime. So you're reading a headline about some murder, or even some weird break in, and unless you read the story to find out it's in a town 1000 miles away, you'll thinkit's local. I notice this all the time. The local MLive for me (Michigan) carries all the local stories, but then adds a couple crime stories from some other city constantly.

And what's more, people are oblivious to the fact that the hgih crime in this country is mostly in Red States. The Red States have the worstr economies, worst schools, worst health care, worst social safety nets, and worst criminal justice systems. It's why crime is so bad in so many Red States. But the media is all in on California and Chicago being the places where crime is the worst.

This latest ad that they're running about how Biden opened the borders and let murderers in - yet they won't mention how the Congressional MAGArats shot down the long-desired Border Agreement because IQ45 didn't want Joe to win with a border agreement.
