I was supposed to be in the timeline where John Lennon lived, St Ronnie of the RayGun died, and Al Gore was sworn in on Jan 20, 2001, dammit. I feel so cheated.

(1,297 posts)were screaming our heads off, and ever since the HW and his CABAL committed treason in the 1980 election to install Reagan.
As well as many times/elections since: 2000 Gore.....2004Kerry.......2016Hillary. All have been subject to Republican corruption, and the Dems never challenged.......All because we were intent on taking the High Road, and not wanting to appear as poor losers.....

(4,787 posts)I see neither the Muslim nor Democratic Socialist label as necessarily all defining for mayor elect Mamdani. We have had all sorts of people in our nation's history that were at one time or another labeled as misfits, failures, scoundrels, womanizers and worse and yet, when tested, rose to be noble and performed honored service to their constituents and the country. Grant and Truman were failed businessmen many times over, Andrew Jackson was pulled out of a bar to lead the Americans in battle of New Orleans, with pirates in tow to help, Jack Kennedy was flawed and Catholic (!) and yet he inspired, and on and on.
I do hope, for both the city he will soon lead and the bigger global issue, that he reaches out to Jews and seeks a workable common ground. He is not wrong in noting the sad history of the Palestinian people. But that cannot, in today's world and reality, be a one sided conversation. I wish him well. All the more so if he proves a distraction and thorn in the side to Trump!

(3,230 posts)The religion of the mayor protecting New York from the fascist Trump regime is likewise irrelevant.

(4,770 posts)extremely reich-wing Christians. It was a constant source of wonder to me how everything that Republicans did was god's will. Even when things turned out terribly, it was god works in mysterious ways. And everything that Democratic politicians did was for some nefarious, evil reason.
For people like that it isn't so much what is done, it is who did it.
Edit: Which I guess makes sense, since some christians apparently believe that god has chosen his favorites before they were born.

Perhaps there is no better timeliness. No matter what happens, someone will somehow manage to screw it up.
