Donald Trump's 'Gestapo' Remark Sparks Backlash

Source: newsweek

Updated May 05, 2024 at 2:23 PM EDT

Former President Donald Trump faced backlash on social media on Sunday after he reportedly compared President Joe Biden's administration to the Gestapo, the secret police force of Nazi Germany.

Trump, the presumptive Republican 2024 presidential nominee, reportedly made the remarks at a private, closed-door Republican National Committee (RNC) spring finance retreat for donors on Saturday in Palm Beach, Florida.

"These people are running a Gestapo administration," Trump reportedly said as he commented about his ongoing legal troubles. "And it's the only thing they have. And it's the only way they're going to win in their opinion. Until I got indicted, I was respectful of the office of the president. Once I got indicted, I said, 'Well, now the gloves have to come off.'"

Various other media outlets reportedly verified Trump's comments after listening to an audio recording from Saturday night's event. Newsweek cannot independently verify the reported remarks.

I can imagine that even people at his fundraiser get weary of hearing Trump rant about his legal problems.
But it should make them think twice about writing out a check for him. I dream!!

He has such a limited vocabulary, such a congenitally tunnelized range of understanding the world. I expect he overheard the word gestapo mentioned by one of his toady lieutenants -- Steve Bannon or Stephen Miller or somesuch -- and then told whatever lick spittle does the typing into his Xitter machine spell it for him.

...on Hogan's Heros.

An early Boomer such as him would have grown up with plenty of WW2-related movies and TV, and the Gestapo was a regular looming presence in those.

In which case a number of Republicans in office had better worry because the next thing you will hear in the news is a lot of them announcing their retirement via assisted suicide from the top of buildings, in the shower and falling down steps.

24. Biden White House pushes back in response to Trump 'Gestapo' talk

Donald Trump’s weird whining about the White House resembling the "Gestapo" isn’t just factually wrong and morally offensive, it’s also deeply ironic.

https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/biden-white-house-pushes-back-response-trump-gestapo-talk-rcna150840

When Donald Trump is confronted with news he does not like, he has an unfortunate habit of referencing Nazi Germany. In January 2017, for example, shortly before the Republican was inaugurated, he accused U.S. intelligence agencies of leaking information that made him look bad. “Are we living in Nazi Germany?” Trump asked at the time — as if leaks from intelligence agencies were a significant problem with Hitler’s regime.....

Over the weekend, the former president added to the list. NBC News reported:

Donald Trump compared President Joe Biden’s administration to the secret police force of Nazi Germany in remarks at a private, closed-door donor retreat on Saturday afternoon. ... “These people are running a Gestapo administration,” Trump said, according to audio of the luncheon provided to NBC News.

President Joe Biden’s team was not impressed.

White House spokesperson Andrew Bates said the Democratic incumbent is focused on bringing Americans together, “instead of echoing the appalling rhetoric of fascists, lunching with Neo Nazis, and fanning debunked conspiracy theories that have cost brave police officer their lives.”.....

But as a political matter, if the Republican really wants to have a debate along these lines, he might not like where it ends up. The presumptive GOP nominee, after all, has spent recent months echoing Hitler while lashing out at immigrants, complaining that immigration is “poisoning the blood of our country” and describing migrants as “vermin.”

He’s also the candidate who continues to raise the prospect of building new detention camps, creating a temporary “dictatorship,” cracking down on the free press.
