FEMA assistance made available for Nebraska's storm victims

Federal disaster assistance is available in Nebraska to supplement recovery efforts in the areas affected by severe storms, straight-line winds and tornadoes last month.

In coming days and in coordination with state and local emergency management, the Federal Emergency Management Agency will have staff visiting impacted neighborhoods. They will carry official identification and will not ask for money. This will include staff assessing damage and providing information to residents.

President Joe Biden declared Friday a major disaster exists in Nebraska and made federal funding available for the storms that struck Douglas and Washington Counties on April 25-27. Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses and other programs.

Federal funding also is available to state, tribal, eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for debris removal and emergency work. Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide.

The rest of them can fill out a 50-page form and we'll think about it.
