Democratic leader Jeffries: "Pro-Putin faction" in GOP delayed Ukraine aid

Source: CBS News

Updated on: May 5, 2024 / 9:42 PM EDT

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries said the United States must continue supporting Ukraine to prevent a broader war, and he blamed the delay in aiding the fight against Russia on a "pro-Putin faction" within the Republican Party.

"We can't let Ukraine fall because if it does, then there's a significant likelihood that America will have to get into the conflict — not simply with our money, but with our servicewomen and our servicemen," Jeffries said in an interview with Norah O'Donnell for 60 Minutes.

Jeffries explained that he believes Russian President Vladimir Putin seeks to recreate the Soviet Union, and in doing so, will threaten NATO allies. Putin's invasion of neighboring Georgia did not stop there, Jeffries pointed out, nor did his takeover of Crimea in eastern Ukraine.

"Are we to believe that in the face of this kind of consistent aggression that if we allow Vladimir Putin to succeed in Ukraine that he's only going to stop in Ukraine? Of course not," Jeffries said.

He was awful. Berated me for being a combat veteran. He said I wasn't a real veteran, although I have all the medals to prove it. Never had I dealt with that before. Then he just started talking like he was defending Putin. I told him it was propaganda that got a hold of him. I couldn't take his crap anymore. It was useless to try. One of the first lessons learned in the military was to determine what was fact and what was propaganda. They use Hanoi Jane as a good example.

It's about goddam time that some US politician said this and continues to shout it from the rooftops.

Goddam it, people, Putin did not just wake up one morning and say, "Things are boring around here, let's attack Ukraine."

Use the Google machine -- study articles and maps about the loss of the Soviet Empire and collapse of the Soviet Union.

After WW II, Russia -- the Soviet Union -- controlled Eastern Europe all the way to dividing Germany into East and West Germany -- anyone remember that? When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1989-1991, Russian control of East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Ukraine, etc., etc., ended.

Putin has said time and again -- his words: "The loss of the Soviet Empire in Eastern Europe is the greatest catastrophe of the 20th Century." The greatest catastrophe of the 20th Century was
-- Not the Holocaust.
-- Not the loss of 25 MILLION Russians in WW II
-- BUT THE LOSS OF THE SOVIET UNION'S EUROPEAN EMPIRE.

He also has made it clear he intends to restore that empire.

And why start with Ukraine? Because:
-- Ukraine is the biggest nation of the lost empire
-- Ukraine is not a NATO member, so, attack on Ukraine will not trigger NATO to come to their aid
-- Ukraine produces 10 PERCENT OF THE WORLD'S WHEAT -- think about the implications of that for Russia's income and Russia's ability to coerce other nations.

So, yes, Jeffries is correct but it's about time some US leader said that and now it's past time for everyone from President Biden on down to say what I just said above.

Don't waste time thanking me for this current events lesson. Get busy informing your Congresscritters and your neighbors who vote.
Biden will stop Putin, Trump will get us into a war in Europe because he will roll over for Putin.

I wish I could rec this post a million times and pin it to a permanent place at the top of a "top comments' section. It is unreal how often Putin has told us what he wants to do..... and he always works toward that goal.

Can Putin fold or croak?

It would be lights out for the GOP.
