(21,844 posts)the network under Rafah where weapons and supplies get smuggled into Gaza for Hamas.
That is the ONLY reason why Hamas is agreeing to the ceasefire. If their underground compound in Rafah is left intact, they will be able to make it the center for rebuilding their striking power against Israel.
Israel is determined to destroy Hamas completely. So they might go after Rafah anyway, which would be strategically good for destroying Hamas, but politically bad for Israel because it would make Israel into the "bad guy" who refused peace.
It would be like the Allies in WWII defeating the Nazis in conquered countries, but failing to go into Germany itself to completely defeat them.

(33,475 posts)That pressure got Hamas to change their "permanent" requirement pretty fast. They'd just walked away from negotiations the day before.

(5,881 posts)Unlike what their useful protestors think, they aren't freedom fighters and they aren't trustworthy. "From the River to the Sea" is a call for mass murder. IF they could they would have already. Israel can, but won't, no matter what the protestors or the anti-Israel hyperbolic drivel people say and think says.

(33,475 posts)Sure, Hamas will break the ceasefire. But let's get one in place 1st - although this all looks to be nothing more than a press exercise now...

(53,137 posts)and you're pretending Hamas is the problem?

(33,475 posts)Israel has compromised its negotiating position repeatedly. So, yes, Hamas is the problem, and yes, there are lots of problems.
I don't know what ceasefire you assert Israel didn't abide by. The one in November that ended when Hamas shot Israelis waiting for a bus?

(33,475 posts)and Israel recently reduced their initial hostage release number demands. Hamas has been the obstinate party because they insisted on a permanent ceasefire and IDF withdrawal.
Why the kneejerk dismissal?

(33,475 posts)Israel had agreed to the outline of this deal long ago - and it's not JUST Egypt and Qatar's terms - it's the US, too. The CIA Director's been directly involved.

Hopefully, this gets finalized and enacted today.

Hamas keeps playing games, and I doubt Israel is in the mood to play.

(9,616 posts)As far as I know, Israel did. Then, two days ago, hamas modified it and "accepted" their own modified version.
Would you accept a five dollar bill where I crossed out "5" and wrote "6" in its place for six singles? After all, it's a very minor change!

(592 posts)Khalil al-Hayya, a member of Hamass political bureau, told Al Jazeera Arabic that the Qatari-Egyptian proposal includes a withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and a return of displaced Palestinians to their homes, as well as an exchange of Israeli captives and Palestinian prisoners.
The proposal includes a three-stage truce, each phase lasting 42 days, according to al-Hayya.
In the first phase, indirect negotiations through mediators will resume on the exchange of captives and prisoners. A withdrawal of some Israeli troops from certain areas will also take place, as well as the unhindered return of displaced families to their homes, and the flow of aid, fuel and relief materials into Gaza, he said.
