Mon May 6, 2024, 02:15 PM

the network under Rafah where weapons and supplies get smuggled into Gaza for Hamas.

That is the ONLY reason why Hamas is agreeing to the ceasefire. If their underground compound in Rafah is left intact, they will be able to make it the center for rebuilding their striking power against Israel.

Israel is determined to destroy Hamas completely. So they might go after Rafah anyway, which would be strategically good for destroying Hamas, but politically bad for Israel because it would make Israel into the "bad guy" who refused peace.

It would be like the Allies in WWII defeating the Nazis in conquered countries, but failing to go into Germany itself to completely defeat them.

That pressure got Hamas to change their "permanent" requirement pretty fast. They'd just walked away from negotiations the day before.

Unlike what their useful protestors think, they aren't freedom fighters and they aren't trustworthy. "From the River to the Sea" is a call for mass murder. IF they could they would have already. Israel can, but won't, no matter what the protestors or the anti-Israel hyperbolic drivel people say and think says.

Sure, Hamas will break the ceasefire. But let's get one in place 1st - although this all looks to be nothing more than a press exercise now...

Israel has compromised its negotiating position repeatedly. So, yes, Hamas is the problem, and yes, there are lots of problems.

I don't know what ceasefire you assert Israel didn't abide by. The one in November that ended when Hamas shot Israelis waiting for a bus?

and Israel recently reduced their initial hostage release number demands. Hamas has been the obstinate party because they insisted on a permanent ceasefire and IDF withdrawal.

Why the kneejerk dismissal?

Israel had agreed to the outline of this deal long ago - and it's not JUST Egypt and Qatar's terms - it's the US, too. The CIA Director's been directly involved.

CNN:

A diplomatic source familiar with the talks told CNN that after a day-long meeting in Doha, Qatar’s capital, between CIA Director William Burns and Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, mediators convinced Hamas to accept a three-part deal.

Hopefully, this gets finalized and enacted today.

As far as I know, Israel did. Then, two days ago, hamas modified it and "accepted" their own modified version.

Would you accept a five dollar bill where I crossed out "5" and wrote "6" in its place for six singles? After all, it's a very minor change!

Khalil al-Hayya, a member of Hamas’s political bureau, told Al Jazeera Arabic that the Qatari-Egyptian proposal includes a withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and a return of displaced Palestinians to their homes, as well as an exchange of Israeli captives and Palestinian prisoners.

The proposal includes a three-stage truce, each phase lasting 42 days, according to al-Hayya.

In the first phase, indirect negotiations through mediators will resume on the exchange of captives and prisoners. A withdrawal of some Israeli troops from certain areas will also take place, as well as the unhindered return of displaced families to their homes, and the flow of aid, fuel and relief materials into Gaza, he said.

This is just Hamas seeking to delay Israel from taking out the last remaining Hamas battalion, currently hiding in Rafah, hiding under women and children.
