NEW YORK -- All dogs coming into the U.S. from other countries must be at least 6 months old and microchipped to help prevent the spread of rabies, according to new government rules published Wednesday.
The new rules require vaccination for dogs that have been in countries where rabies is common. The update applies to dogs brought in by breeders or rescue groups as well as pets traveling with their U.S. owners. This new regulation is going to address the current challenges that were facing, said Emily Pieracci, a rabies expert at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who was involved in drafting the updated regulations.
The CDC posted the new rules in the federal register on Wednesday. They take effect Aug. 1 when a temporary 2021 order expires. That order suspended bringing in dogs from more than 100 countries where rabies is still a problem.
The new rules require all dogs entering the U.S. to be at least 6 months, old enough to be vaccinated if required and for the shots to take effect; have a microchip placed under their skin with a code that can be used to verify rabies vaccination; and have completed a new CDC import form.

(25,893 posts)A requirement for rabies vaccination certificates alone will not adequately identify improper vaccination practices or fraudulent paperwork and are insufficient as a stand-alone rabies importation prevention measure. Serologic titers before importation would mitigate the risk for importing DMRVV.
During the last 15 years, five other instances of rabid dogs imported into the United States have been documented (48). This is the first instance during that time frame that resulted from vaccination failure rather than fraudulent or incomplete paperwork. OIE recommends that all countries verify adequate vaccination in dogs from countries with endemic rabies by requiring testing of antibody levels before entry. This OIE recommendation is not currently part of U.S. dog importation requirements. Although data about the outcomes of underdosing rabies vaccines in dogs are limited, large dogs might be more likely to have inadequate titers after rabies vaccination (9). The high vaccine failure rate detected in this investigation, with a higher likelihood of lower immune response to vaccination in larger dogs, is consistent with the expected immunologic response to low-dose vaccination.

(22,618 posts)years been conducting a Rabies Challenge. Every year they expose the dog group to rabies...no new vaccinations. The last time I checked, the single rabies vaccination they received was still providing immunity after five or seven years. I just hope they are satisfied after a number of years and call off the experiment before all the dogs get rabies!!!!!!

(25,893 posts)The late 1940s was a watershed in the control of rabies when veterinarians in
Texas and throughout the US began to actively recommend that dogs be
vaccinated against rabies. The remarkable decrease in the number of human
rabies cases that occurred during the 1940s and 1950s is a tribute to the
effectiveness of widespread rabies vaccination of dogs and cats combined with
effective animal control (Appendixes 3 and 4). Once rabies was controlled in
dogs, the primary vector of rabies to humans changed from dogs to wildlife.

I'd travel at night to avoid Kristy Noem, if I were a vaccinated dog with a microchip 6 months old.
