What Liberals Don't Understand About Ultra-MAGA Voters
Josh Tyrangiel and John McWhorter join Bill Maher to discuss the loyalty of Trump's base and why fake news feels good.
Tucker Carlson's Collection of Unevents
In partnership with Tucker Carlson and the good people of Fox News, we are pleased to offer this gold coin collection commemorating great non-events in history.
New Rule: Oscars So Woke?
When it comes to social justice, liberals are still the tip of the spear, but even that spear comes up short a lot.
Overtime: John McWhorter, Josh Tyrangiel
Bill Maher and his guests continue their conversation after the show.
Here's a "bootleg" version of the show which includes the interview with David Byrne (5:49), entire panel discussion with John McWhorter and Josh Tyrangiel (14:35), Bill's "funny bit" (26:17), and includes the opening part of New Rules (46:43). It won't last long, as usual:

(233,775 posts)And it's John McWhorter who regularly brings up language, plus his panel partner, Josh Tyrangiel (who I'd never seen before), was on board with that discussion and brought up some good points.

(13,298 posts)I found the discussion about equality vs. equity kind of muddled.

(233,775 posts)John McWhorter is always a terrific guest and Josh Tyrangiel - who I'd never seen before - was a great compliment to his discussion. One of the best panels this season.

(113,347 posts)Equality is what we should be shooting for. Equity might be a stepping stone in some places, but people who are unprepared are going to fail and that serves no one.
Until last night, I thought Equity was the theater union. I wish the word coiners had chosen a different one, like "parity." That one fits better, anyway.
David Byrne was a little annoying because 70 looks so damned good on him.

Tyrangiel was speaking about Chinese political ownership of TikTok, though the same is true of Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, etc albeit with additions (shareholder return at all cost and unregulated social and political influence from foreign entities and propagandists).
All are equally terrifying and wreaking havoc on group and personal relationships and freedoms worldwide. They've become the favorite tool of autocrats.
It's behind the rapid change in language too.
Great show, great panel. Thanks for sharing, Rhiannon12866

(233,775 posts)John McWhorter is always a great addition to the panel and I agree that this was one of the best this season, if not the best (Malcolm Nance was obviously exceptional, too!).
And I agree that they brought up points we need to pay attention to involving the unregulated threats of social media, and you're right, they're being used as tools by dangerous autocrats. We read here on DU about Cambridge Analytica and Facebook, let alone the warnings by whistleblowers, but as far as we've heard, nothing has been done. And now there's the threats posed by TikTok and China as well.
I don't know if you noticed, but I added Overtime when it became available. I'm hoping that they go back to making it available the same night rather than hours after it appears on CNN, but we'll see.
And I appreciated the language discussion, too, which is John McWhorter's field of expertise.
Behind the Aegis
(55,341 posts)I always like McWhorter. Anytime he is on, I try to watch whatever the program. I have read six of his books. Sociolinguistics has always interested me. I was not familiar with Josh Tyrangiel, but I hope he comes back. I liked him too. The "equality v. equity" discussion was good and another example of people conflating terms and ideas, gender and sex comes to mind.

(233,775 posts)As for Josh Tyrangiel, I'd never heard of him, either, but I agree that he added a great deal to the discussion and, with John McWhorter, one of the best panels and discussions that they've had. And thanks for recommending John McWhorter's books, I'd like to hear more from him.
And I don't know if you caught Overtime, but it was a continuation of the panel, and I added it to the OP as soon it was available. I don't know why they're showing it on CNN for those who may not have caught the show, but that's why they're now delaying uploading until the next day.
