I am rather risk-averse, and I don't criticize folks who are more brave. Personally, I wouldn't get close with a wild rodent because they can carry hantavirus, especially in the Southwest. We use live traps at my house and release the adorable beasties back to nature, but we don't make friends. Here is a link to the occurrence in various states
