Vet Bills -- My Ex's Dog Was Sent Home To Die [View all]

My ex has a 1 year old Collie who is a sweetheart. The dog started to throw up food and a little blood. She was taken to an emergency vet, as her primary vet was not open. After x-rays and about $2,000 in testing, they could not determine the exact cause, but believe it is a blockage of the small intestine. She was told that it would be around $10,000 to operate on the dog, and that there is around a 15% change the dog would recover on it own. She could not afford that type of costs, so she left with the dog.

I suggested to massage the abdominal area in the hopes it could free whatever was lodged there.

I had an upper and lower endoscopy and the billed insurance billed amount was several thousand. I had a heart ablation and that was $20K, with an installed loop recorder. It's unbelievable that a pets surgery is almost akin to human surgery when there is no human life at risk and the owner waves liability.

UPDATE1: She was given some saline packs and IVs to hydrate the dog until Monday and provided with another vet that should be cheaper--but the cost is unknown at this point. The animal hospital said to expect a 20% mortality getting this procedure.
