8. Our vet told us that lots of new vets are culled by emergency vet hospitals

They charge a premium for a visit and care, but the flip side is lots of euthanized pets due to lack of funds. Our vet says it's lucrative, but soul killing.

Even regular veterinary services have gone up. Dentals? Nothing under 1k, and that's for a simple cleaning. We just spent 3k for one of our cats who needed a full tooth extraction due to stomatitis.
Shortly after, our only dog, an Italian Greyhound, was diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma on her foreleg. An initial needle aspirate and subsequent incisional biopsy later (that actually sped up the tumor growth), led us to one of those insanely expensive referral hospitals, only to be told nothing can be done other than waiting until the tumor causes pain and/or bursts open, and then Emma will need to have her leg amputated. So between cat and dog, we are already out $6,000. The amputation, if we want it done at the referral hospital as opposed to the local vet, will be another 5k.

We have a savings account for pet emergencies, and our youngest 5 cats all have insurance. But I feel for anybody who can't afford life saving veterinary care for their pets. It's heartbreaking and cruel.

It's only gotten worse since COVID. And the animals are, as usual, the ones that suffer the most - or get deprived of care and life. All because it just costs too much.
