Not one of the regular units in the area who knew him.

According to what I read, they were shelled by Ukrainian forces and a number of them were killed or wounded. He went over to them, probably to document as a "reporter", they heard his accent and assumed he was an American spy. A "tragic" misunderstanding.

They did what they normally do to captured "enemies". Which means he was tortured and beaten and possibly gang raped. Then they must have realized that they fucked up and decided to get rid of the "evidence".

They may "love" him in Donetsk, but most of russia has no idea who he is.

I think the wife is anxious to find out what happened to him, and have the guys who did it punished, which probably makes her a liability for the regime. Don't know how much longer she's going to last.
