Dear Auntie Pinko,

Why did god make most Republicans rich but selfish? Does the Almighty truly favor the GOP, as they would like us to believe?

Sincerely yours, Dem in a daze

Dear Daze,

Such an abundance of assumptions in such a brief query! I do so admire real economy of expression.

First of all, unlike some members of the Republican Party, I would never presume to speak on behalf of the Deity. I hope, therefore, that you don't mind Auntie Pinko addressing your enquiry based entirely on my own observations.

Many people throughout human history have posed the questions, "Why would a benevolent God allow bad things to happen? Why would a good God allow evil to exist?" We have developed elaborate theologies, generally attributed to Divine Inspiration, to explain these mysteries. My own theology may be a bit individual, but it is protected by the First Amendment, at least for now.

I do not pretend to understand the Great Design. But it seems to me that the Designer gave us all we need to survive and to play our role therein. We have abilities that allow us to survive individually and to perpetuate our species (like being able to compete, to defend ourselves and our young, to perceive and act upon threats, and so on.)

I also (with apologies to the nice Presbyterian minister down the street,) believe that we were given Free Will - the choice to use these lovely God-given abilities however we wish. Thus we can continually improve ourselves by constantly facing moral challenges and making decisions.

It would be cruel, though, to give us all this without giving us some idea of what we should be striving to achieve. So the Deity gives us clues to the Great Design, by sending us Divinely wise and Divinely inspired people whose lives and actions illuminate larger portions of the Design than we are able to see on our own.

Since the Deity in infinite wisdom created so many different kinds of people in so many different circumstances (including Republicans, let us not forget,) I believe the Good God has made certain that there is a guide somewhere for each and every one of us, if we will only take the trouble to look, and listen.

Now, while we have to read these messages through the admittedly faulty medium of human transmission, it doesn't take an extraordinary level of discernment to see the Divine Voice behind each-the Voice that rings out, again and again, with pleas for love, for justice, for charity, for us to use our gifts to help one another.

Now, remember up above, where I said God has given us free will so that we can "continually improve ourselves by constantly facing moral challenges and making decisions?"

There you have it, Daze. Republicanism is a moral challenge that gives us a wonderful opportunity to improve ourselves. Yet another working of a benevolent Deity, by whatever Name you choose to acknowledge Her/Him. (At least, as long as the Supreme Court permits.)

Thanks again for writing to Auntie Pinko!
