Ask Auntie Pinko
May 24, 2001

Dear Auntie Pinko,

Why do you think we Americans so meekly accepted the coup that installed Bush into office?

Sincerely,

Karen,
Oakland, CA

Dear Karen,

Americans are by nature a fairly easy-going people. We tend to be too busy earning money or spending it to bother ourselves over "issues." However, there do seem to be a few things that can shake us out of the placid tenor of our days:

1. When we are directly harmed by something, and are seeking restitution (and/or to prevent it from happening to others);

2. When we see a clear chance of concrete benefit to ourselves and/or our children;

3. When our consciences are deeply touched by a deep injustice done to others; and

4. When we feel someone or some group of people is having more fun than we are, or taking advantage of us.

In the case of the Supreme Court's lamentable determination to assume a mandate to "settle" the election using an indefensibly twisted rationalization of their legal role (Auntie Pinko can read that last line about "Don't try this at home, kiddies" - if they don't want others duplicating this particular act of judicial contortionism, they know they're doing shoddy law!) the effects will probably include all four of the above. But the effects are delayed for the average American.

Our everyday lives don't look much different, for now.

But don't worry, Karen. Mr. Bush is working very hard to bring the effects home to every American.

When someone is directly harmed by a discriminatory policy or action in a workplace, and seeks restitution, only to find out that it is no longer available, that person will no longer be "meek."

When it becomes clear that in order to preserve drinkable water, breathable air, and fertile land for our children's benefit we must cease to allow Ms. Norton and her Wall Street associates to set public environmental policy, the meekness will recede further.

As the ability of our entry-level jobs to support a family declines, and as public resources to assist poor families in closing the gap between work income and bare survival are withdrawn, Americans will wake up to the injustices being done to our children, and we will no longer be meek.

As the "benefits" from Mr. Bush's tax cut plan are actually received and most Americans compare the huge amounts the ultra-wealthy are reaping to the pittances they get, we will no longer be meek.

Mr. Bush and his friends are on the job.

Trust them. And thank you for writing to Auntie Pinko!
