President George W. Bush’s increasingly erratic behavior and wide mood swings has the halls of the West Wing buzzing lately as aides privately express growing concern over their leader’s state of mind.

In meetings with top aides and administration officials, the President goes from quoting the Bible in one breath to obscene tantrums against the media, Democrats and others that he classifies as “enemies of the state.”

Worried White House aides paint a portrait of a man on the edge, increasingly wary of those who disagree with him and paranoid of a public that no longer trusts his policies in Iraq or at home.

The President's abrupt dismissal of CIA Directory George Tenet Wednesday night is, aides say, an example of how he works.

"Tenet wanted to quit last year but the President got his back up and wouldn't hear of it," says an aide. "That would have been the opportune time to make a change, not in the middle of an election campaign but when the director challenged the President during the meeting Wednesday, the President cut him off by saying 'that's it George. I cannot abide disloyalty. I want your resignation and I want it now."

It reminds me of life in a local newsroom when upper management got house-cleaned. Or there was a new program director who didn't appreciate the news director he'd inherited. If you were an underling in that newsroom you knew to lay low and make like you're invisible, and hope you could sidestep the heads rolling down the hall while you spend most of your time and attention looking for another gig so you could get the hell outta there. They'll be panicking, especially if their numbers keep dropping. They'll likely start making bigger mistakes. And there will be more leaks. And more sharks circling. These are the End Times. I wouldn't be surprised if bush transmogrifies it in his own feeble mind that it's the "End Times" of a biblical proportion, and not just his OWN PERSONAL End Times. The question then becomes one about people around him who may realize they have to start containing him, bigtime.

The problem with political labels is that they're constantly being claimed by people who have appetites and perspectives at odds with prior meanings of such labels. For the vast majority of human history, the only significant threat to liberty was government, whether a monarchy, a dictatorship, or a majoritarian ("populist") oppression of minorities. Thus, people who subscribe to conventional libertarian perspectives now often call themselves "Classical Liberal." Sadly, however, so do Corporatists. So, I try to distinguish between "neo-libertarians" and Hayek-libertarians (or those who perch somewhere on the {contemporary-}liberal-to-{classical-}libertarian ideological spectrum).

The problem lies in the ascendancy of concentrated capital control in pseudo-persons of massive global corporations. It's not "business" per se, nor is it all corporations ... merely those corrupted ones embarked upon the purchase of governments and accumulation of global power. Think Enron. Think Halliburton. Think Exxon. Think Morgan Bank. From a classical perspective, libertarians don't advocate much in the way of government control over enterprise ... but they never advocated for the kind of privilege granted to such entities either. Thus, arguing for "smaller government" without stamping out the de-facto-government power acquired by global corporations is, in my view, misguided.

"Third Way" is the euphemism used by Blair and Clinton to describe a political posture that's an amalgam of contemporary conservative and contemporary liberal ideologies. (This is why they go for "deregulation" - taking the restraints off the lunatic corporatists in the various insane asylums called UK and USA.)

I need hardly say that nationalism of this sort is something very different from patriotism and that an aversion to nationalism is fully compatible with a deep attachment to national traditions. But the fact that I prefer and feel reverence for some of the traditions of my society need not be the cause of hostility to what is strange and different.

Doug Thompson realized the value of capturing history 45 years ago as a 10-year-old schoolboy in Farmville, Virginia, when the community, caught up in a fight over integration, closed the public schools and opened an all-white private school.

Thompson wrote about his experiences and submitted his story to The Farmville Herald,the local newspaper. His essay was picked up by other newspapers around he country. He also took pictures for the paper.

When his family relocated to the Blue Ridge Mountain community of Floyd, the then 14-year-old Thompson took his photographs and stories to Pete Hallman, editor of the weekly Floyd Press. Hallman encouraged the young man to continue writing and taking photos, teaching him the ins and outs of the newspaper business.

Thompson went on to join the staff of The Roanoke Times where he covered the police beat, emerging racial turmoil in the city and tackled other tough subjects. His story about a young girl who obtained an abortion (illegal at the time) won the top feature writing award from the Virginia Press Association. Another, about street racers in the city, won another feature writing award while his coverage of the murder of a Southwest Roanoke couple and the abduction and rape of their teenaged daughters brought the top news writing award from the association

After moving on to The Telegraph in Alton, Illinois, Thompson continued to win awards for writing and photography, capturing the Illinois Associated Press Managing Editors top prizes for news, feature and column writing as well as first place awards from the Illinois Press Association.

Thompson took a sabbatical from newspapers in 1981 and moved to Washington and work on Capitol Hill, where he served as press secretary to two members of Congress, Chief of Staff to a third and then Special Assistant to the Ranking Member of the House Space, Science and Technology Committee.

The committee worked with the National Science Foundation to bring the Internet into the private sector and Thompson saw the tremendous potential of the 'Net as a communications tool. He used that foresight to start a web hosting and design company in 1994 and that same year launched Capitol Hill Blue as the web's first political news site.

Today, Doug Thompson Media encompasses the original web hosting and design company (The Buffalo Mountain Company), a photography business (Blue Ridge Photography), documentary films (Buffalo Mountain Films), a foundation (Our America) and several other companies.

In 2001, Our America launched a 10-year project to document and first decade of the new century through stories, photos and films.

Is he an idiot, or does he just play one on TV?

The debate about President Bush’s horrendous public speaking is sure to continue its invasion of American dinner tables and barstools after Dubya’s distracted stumble through his most recent White House press conference. The president’s verbal retardation was as apparent as ever, especially when asked if he felt he had “failed as a communicator” — not as a president, not as a leader, but as a communicator.

Ironically, in his response to accusations of ineffective and repetitive speaking, Bush predictably retreated to a formulaic tangent about his commitment to get the bad guys, punctuating it with anxious stammers, poor grammar, and his trademark deer-in-the-headlights stare. He finally conceded that, “Maybe I need to learn to communicate better.”

Gosh, do you really think so, George?

Because of the media’s meticulous coverage, public-speaking skills (or the lack thereof) play a large part in defining politicians’ identities, whether they like it or not. Look at what happened to good old Joe Lieberman, another politician whose dreadful oratory skills wreaked havoc on his political identity. Like Bush, late-night comedians lampooned him relentlessly, specifically for his droopy speaking style (one Conan O’Brien sketch had him dozing off mid-speech). The difference between the two men, however, is that Lieberman is obviously intelligent but leaves us doubting his passion, while Bush is obviously passionate but leaves us doubting his intelligence.

Bush’s blundering performance in that most recent press conference — as well as his awkward February interview with Tim Russert — brings up serious questions about his tunnel vision on relevant issues. His familiar tough-guy smirk and shoot-‘em-straight swagger have deteriorated into desperation to stay on message (which basically means infinite repetitions and combinations of the phrases “war on terror,” “stay the course” and “the American people”).

While presidents from Kennedy to Clinton often traded witty barbs with reporters during their frequent press conferences, Bush understandably shies away from media interaction and admittedly was “stumped” when asked about mistakes he had made since Sept. 11, according to an Associated Press report.

"Maybe I'm not as quick on my feet as I should be,” replied the visibly stunned commander in chief, as he struggled to think of an acceptable answer. "I'm sure something will pop into my head here … but it hadn’t yet."

You can’t get hired at McDonald’s with a response like that.

This undoubtedly explains the choking on the pretzel, the wearing of the mouth piece when riding a bike, that even professional bike riders don't don't use mouth pieces (And let's not forget that he had his personal doctor accompany him on a bike ride).

The nearly falling out of cars, planes and other movable objects that he gets on. This explains the constant unexplainable buries on the face. The slurred slow botched speeches.

I'm sure that just as the great doctor says, that * is getting worse. The medication is not working. The alcohol it's part in worsening his condition.

Nonetheless, this disease is causing him to behave irrationally. Add his sidekick, Rove the "There Are No Rules Street Thug", and you have the makings of a bomb or many bombs going off.

The custom of giving blessings goes back to the very earliest times. The New Dispensation saw the adoption of this rite by Our Divine Lord and His Apostles, and so, elevated, ennobled, and consecrated by such high and holy usage, it came at a very early stage in the Church's history to assume definite and concrete shape as the chief among her sacramentals.

Since, then, blessings, in the sense in which they are being considered, are entirely of ecclesiastical institution, the Church has the power to determine who shall have the right and duty to confer them. This she has done by entrusting their administration to those who are in sacerdotal orders. The solitary case in which one inferior to a priest is empowered to bless, is where the deacon blesses the paschal candle in the ceremonies of Holy Saturday. This exception is more apparent than real. For in the instance referred to the deacon acts by way of a deputy and, moreover, employs the grains of incense already blessed by the celebrant. Priests, then, are the ordinary ministers of blessings, and this is only in the fitness of things since they are ordained, as the words of the Pontifical run: "ut quæcumque benedixerint benedicantur, et quacumque consecraverint consecrentur" (That what-ever they bless may be blessed, and whatever they consecrate shall be consecrated). When, therefore, laymen and women are represented as blessing others it is to be understood that this is an act of will on their part, a wish or desire for another's spiritual or temporal prosperity, an appeal to God which has nothing to recommend if but the merits of personal sanctity. The ordinary greetings and salutations that take places between Christians and Catholics, leavened by mutual wishes for a share of heavenly grace, must not be confounded with liturgical blessings. St. Gregory first definitely taught that the angels are divided into hierarchies or orders, each having its own role to play in the economy of creation. Similarly the Church recognizes different orders or grades among her ministers, assigning to some higher functions than to others. The working out of this idea is seen in the case of conferring blessings. For while it is true that a priest can ordinarily give them, some blessings are reserved to the Supreme Pontiff, some to bishops, and some to parish priests and religious. The first class is not large. The pope reserves to himself the right to bless the pallium for archbishops, Agnus-Deis, the Golden Rose, the Royal Sword, and also to give that benediction of persons to which an indulgence of some days is attached. President Richard M. Nixon jokingly threatened to drop a nuclear bomb on Capitol Hill in March 1974 as Congress was moving to impeach him over the Watergate scandal, according to transcripts of telephone conversations among his closest aides that were released yesterday.

"I was told to get the football," White House Chief of Staff Alexander M. Haig Jr. told Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger less than five months before the president's forced resignation, during a conversation in which the two men exchanged stories about Nixon's increasingly erratic behavior.

"What do you mean?" asked Kissinger, who had called Haig to express concern that the president might unwittingly unleash a Middle East war with his new, get-tough policy against Israel.

"His black nuclear bag," replied Haig. "He is going to drop it on the Hill."

The March 20, 1974, exchange is among 20,000 pages of transcripts of telephone conversations that Kissinger deposited in the Library of Congress in 1976 with the stipulation that they remain secret until at least five years after his death. Kissinger turned the transcripts over to the National Archives in February 2002 after being threatened with legal action by the National Security Archive, a nonprofit group that campaigns against government secrecy. The National Archives reviewed the transcripts for national security and privacy purposes and released almost all of them yesterday.

The transcripts shed light on the extraordinarily complex relationship between Nixon and Kissinger during a turbulent period in American foreign policy, from the bombing of Cambodia in 1970 to the Yom Kippur war of 1973 and diplomatic breakthroughs with China and the Soviet Union. Even as Kissinger attempted to convince Nixon of his loyalty, he adopted a sardonic tone in conversations with Haig and other aides.

In the March 20 transcript, neither Kissinger nor Haig seems alarmed by threats to bomb Congress or "to go after the Israelis" after "he is through with the Europeans."

"He is just unwinding," Haig told Kissinger. "Don't take him too seriously."

On other occasions, as in December 1970, when Nixon proposed an escalation in the bombing of Cambodia, Kissinger and Haig felt obliged to humor the president while laughing at him behind his back. During that episode, Kissinger was still serving as national security adviser, and Haig was one of his deputies.

The Air Force is "not designed for any war we are likely to have to fight," Kissinger told Nixon after the president railed against U.S. pilots for "farting around doing nothing" over Cambodia and "running goddamn milk runs in order to get the air medal." Both men suspected North Vietnamese guerrillas of using Cambodia as a sanctuary and supply line to South Vietnam.

"It's a disgraceful performance," Nixon went on. "I want gunships in there. That means armed helicopters, DC-3s, anything else that will destroy personnel that can fly. I want it done!! Get them off their ass."

"We will get it done immediately, Mr. President," Kissinger replied.

After talking to Nixon, Kissinger got on the phone with Haig to pass on the president's orders for "a massive bombing campaign in Cambodia," using "anything that flies on anything that moves." The transcript then records an unintelligible comment that "sounded like Haig laughing."

The transcripts include several episodes that appear at odds with Kissinger's version of events, such as his claim that Washington had nothing to do with the September 1973 military coup in Chile that toppled the democratically elected, leftist government of Salvador Allende. "We didn't do it," Kissinger told Nixon, "I mean we helped them. created the conditions as great as possible."

Peter Kornbluh, a Latin America specialist at the National Security Archive, said the passage appeared to mark an acknowledgment by Kissinger that U.S. policy paved the way for the coup that brought Augusto Pinochet to power. "It's diametrically opposed to the account he provides in his memoirs," Kornbluh said.

The transcripts show Nixon and Kissinger congratulating each other on the overthrow of "a pro-Communist . . . anti-American" government in Chile. The president agreed with Kissinger's assessment that the American press was guilty of "unbelievable, filthy hypocrisy" in expressing concern over Allende's overthrow while calling for the outlawing of the apartheid regime in South Africa.

NYT confirms key element of today's "Bush is CRAZY" internet story

All day this amusing but presumptively dubious story has been kicking around: http://www.capitolhillblue.com/artman/publish/printer_4636.shtml For those who haven't read it, it essentially says Bush has lost his mind and the WH has devolved into something akin to the atmosphere of Nixon's last days.

My chief interest in the piece is that it provided an explanation of the monumental disarray associated with Bush's announcement of Tenet's resignation, and particularly what happened during the minutes *after* Bush's press conference with PM Howard and before his insane Tenet announcement. The CapHillBlue story said that Bush fired Tenet himself without telling any of the big players that are presumed to run the WH and that he told them only minutes before his announcement.

Leaving aside whether Tenet resigned or was fired, the key here is that Bush was keeping it a secret from his own people until only minutes before he bugged out of town for Europe. That was, to me and many others, the single most difficult thing to swallow thing in the entire CapHillBlue story.

(On edit for clarity) Everyone agrees that Capitol Hill Blue has a less than perfect track record and (almost) everyone has treated the story with caution, awaiting confirmation of key elements from more mainstream sources. (end edit)

This paragraph wasn't in the early editions of today's New York Times but sneaked into the final:

After delivering a press conference with the Australian PM in the Rose Garden, Bush apparently walked back into the Oval Office, where he mentioned the resignation to Cheney, Powell, Rice, and other senior advisers. If this article has any credibility (http://www.capitolhillblue.com/artman/publish/printer_4636.shtml ) then the real story is one that few of us considered yesterday; that Tenet was fired by Bush on the spur of the moment and without approval from Cheney or Rove.

"Tenet wanted to quit last year but the President got his back up and wouldn't hear of it," says an aide. "That would have been the opportune time to make a change, not in the middle of an election campaign but when the director challenged the President during the meeting Wednesday, the President cut him off by saying 'that's it George. I cannot abide disloyalty. I want your resignation and I want it now." Tenet was allowed to resign "voluntarily" and Bush informed his shocked staff of the decision Thursday morning. One aide says the President actually described the decision as "God's will."
I believe that Bush is personally running the show and has been for at least a year. That's been the cause of many arguments with friends who insist he's incapable of running the show. But as "the show" shows more and more signs of disarray I've become more comfortable with my assumptions--this is what it looks like when a border-line retarded Jesus freak seizes the reigns of government. In fact, this administration's Iraq policy of doing the most destructive possible thing and then correcting policy only after it has done maximum damage is reminiscent of George III's interference with England's handling of our Revolutionary War. (George III had serious mental problems, hence the film title THE MADNESS OF KING GEORGE)

I think Bush got up on his hind legs when the WMD weren't found. (I have no doubt whatsoever that Bush truly believed in the WMD... he's not very bright.) Bush seized the reigns with only his instructions from God to guide him. Real DR. STRANGELOVE stuff.

The idea of Bush distrusting his advisers and running things himself based on instructions from God (aka 'a damaged part of his brain') is the darkest possible circumstance yet normally pessimistic conspiracists don't even consider it because they want to believe that everything is part of a plan. I'm in the A. J. P. Taylor school, believing that a lot of history's notable horrors arise from incompetence, emotionalism and bad luck.

But even with those prior assumptions I hadn't entertained the possibility that Bush has lost touch with reality to the extent that he would act without first touching base with Rove, Rice, or Karen Hughes! At least not on a matter with such great political and national security implications.

Maybe the situation is even worse than I thought...

I was obvious to all that some dreadful emotional moment happened yesterday during the few minutes after Bush appeared with Prime Minister Howard and before he announced Tenet was leaving. It was (and is) obvious to me that losing Tenet was NOT the politically savvy course. That clear political down-side, combined with the lack of coordination and preparation, suggested to me that Tenet had indeed left against the Presidents wishes and that Bush was hurt and scared by it.

But perhaps, as the article suggests, Bush was hurt and scared because he had made a command decision in full dementia and was shocked by the reactions to his bold move when he belatedly informed Powell, Cheney, Rove, Rice and others. In that scenario Bush's rattled confusion during the announcement was because half of his government had just reacted to the news with, "Are you fucking MENTAL? Why would you fire Tenet? He's our only lightening rod for criticism!"

Either way, I continue to maintain that this could not have been a coordinated administration decision, but I am amending my thinking to include the possibility that the political damage and lack of coordination are due to Bush being demented.


IMPORTANT POSTSCRIPT (on edit): Okay, drawing together some threads that are out there... so Tenet requests a night-time meeting wih Bush personally in the WH residence, and at that meeting "when the director challenged the President during the meeting Wednesday, the President cut him off by saying 'that's it George. I cannot abide disloyalty. I want your resignation and I want it now."

If Tenet didn't meet privately with Bush for the purpose of resigning and was instead fired, what was the private meeting about and what did Tenet say in that meeting that was so disloyal? One off-the-cuff theory; Tenet refused to do something vis-a-vis the Plame investigation. I know I just opened a family-size roll of tinfoil (and I HATE tinfoil) but I had to ask. (On the non-tinfoil side, why is CapBlue able to quote from that private meeting? Was it not private or is their story bullshit?)

On September 30th of last year Rep. John Conyers, Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee sent a letter to the CIA requesting a description of what contacts the Agency had had with Justice about the Plame matter prior to the commencement of the investigation.

Then last Friday, January 30th, the CIA responded in a letter we've just added to the TPM Document Collection.

According to the letter the CIA first contacted Justice by phone on July 24th, 2003. They followed up on July 30th, 2003 with a letter advising them of a possible violation of criminal law and informing them that they had opened their own investigation.

The folks at the CIA seem not to have gotten an altogether satisfactory response to the July 30th letter because they again sent the letter, by fax, on September 5th, 2003.

Then on September 16, 2003 they contacted Justice yet again to inform them that they (i.e., CIA) had completed their investigation. They provided a memo summarizing their findings and requested that the FBI begin a criminal investigation of the matter.

Finally on September 29th, Justice notified the CIA that they had in fact begun an investigation.

Why did it take so long? Why did the CIA have to press so hard?

I believe in one article Pilger called Dean the only anti-war candidate, for example--it fit his point at the time, but it wasn't accurate. If you ask me to provide a link, I'll have to do a search tomorrow morning, as I'm going to bed. But someone ought to be able to find it--I believe I made a comment somewhere in the thread.

This does NOT mean this sort of thing is 'common' for CommonDreams or for Pilger, but there are instances of articles that seem to willfully obscure some facts to make a larger point. Of course, almost every major newspaper has been guilty of this, so I don't think this makes CD especially problematic.

So I guess I would have to disagree. Took me a while to do so, though.

Even if that statement had included a qualifier like "mostly" or "often" the unmitigated bit about "without regards to any journalistic standards" is pure horsesh*t.

Yes, CD has a pretty clear lefty slant but that doesn't mean there's no selection criterium beyond sheer ideological fitness for purpose... Yes, sometimes drivel gets posted. So what? Check out the recent NY Times editorial on its Iraq coverage.

If that comment is inspired by a perceived lack of articles that "favor the right" then the remedy is obvious: check out NewsMax for balance.

Sounds like a comment made by another patient suffering from the political Binary Syndrome in this country...

Of course they do publish advocacy pieces, but they don't pretend they're nanpartisan unbiased factual newspieces, like the RNC or Fox does...

that in general are from individuals with high journalistic standards. they bill themselves as a news service that provides news for the progressive community. of course they are going to publish articles that fit that viewpoint! but the articles are by a vast majority, of good journalistic standards. their newswire is just press releases from organizations without commentary, so you can make up your own mind. i have no problems at all with the site, and in fact it's one of my favorites. i honestly don't see where the problem is, unless you just aren't keen on reading things from a progressive viewpoint.

This report states Bush is said to be taking "oral medication at least twice a day according to because of an unspecified 'indisposition'." Such an 'indisposition' might well be related to either of the items above. IF this story is true - and quite clearly there IS something wrong with President Bush's mental faculties - we have a national crisis at hand. Bush has steadfastly refused to open his medical records - a sure indicator there is something to hide.

What is Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome?
Wernicke's encephalopathy is a degenerative brain disorder caused by the lack of thiamine (vitamin B1). It may result from alcohol abuse, dietary deficiencies, prolonged vomiting, eating disorders, or the effects of chemotherapy.

Symptoms include mental confusion, vision impairment, stupor, coma, hypothermia, hypotension, and ataxia.

Korsakoff's amnesic syndrome-a memory disorder-also results from a deficiency of thiamine, and is associated with alcoholism. The
heart, vascular, and nervous system are involved. Symptoms include amnesia, confabulation, attention deficit, disorientation, and vision impairment.

The main features of Korsakoff’s amnesic syndrome are the impairments in acquiring new information or establishing new memories, and in retrieving previous memories. Although Wernicke’s and Korsakoff’s may appear to be two different disorders, they are generally considered to be different stages of the same disorder, which is called Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. Wernicke’s encephalopathy represents the “acute” phase of the disorder, and Korsakoff’s amnesic syndrome represents the "chronic" phase.

Is there any treatment?
Treatment involves replacement of thiamine and providing proper nutrition and hydration. In some cases, drug therapy is also recommended.

What is the prognosis?
Most symptoms can be reversed if detected and treated promptly. However, improvement in memory function is slow and, usually, incomplete. Without treatment, these disorders can be disabling and life-threatening.

What research is being done?
The NINDS supports research on neurological disorders such as Wernicke’s encephalopathy, Korsakoff’s amnesic syndrome, and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, aimed at finding ways to prevent them. The National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism also supports research on these disorders.

Scary that so many are jumping ship from this maladministration. It is worse than I could have ever imagined. May many more rats jump and leak their stories!!!
