"Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?" Has anyone else

We watched it for the first time last night. It's not bad, but all the yammering on and on by the contestant was kind of annoying.

2. Same here. It does seem like a fairly easy

way to win some big bucks.

4. I wonder if they pre-screen

I wonder if the show makes sure contestants are a bit stupid before allowing them on. If it seems too easy, they're probably not letting just anyone play. They might only allow Bush voters, for example.

5. Most game shows do

There was a book about 10 years ago (maybe more) by a guy who had been on several game shows, and won quite a bit of money on "sale of the century". He described the pre-screen process, and how when he did really well on tests they wouldnt pick him. The producers dont want someone to blow away the other contestants.
So he would purposely flub answers on the prescreen to get selected.

3. I dont like it

VERY slow pace, worse than Deal or No Deal.

and some of the contestants are dumb as rocks!

6. The contestants are pretty dumb. Also, I think the kids are snotty and annoying.

7. The first show was sad

A man with a degree in American History didn't know the first prez to be impeached. He thought it may be Jackson, but he bailed.

If it had been Old Hickory, though, he'd at least have had the first name right.

8. I saw the first episode, and that was enough for me.

10. I don't like the premise of the show

Just because an adult forgets a 5th grade math formula or whatever doesn't mean s/he is less smart than a 5th grader. I also don't like how when a contestant loses s/he has to say, "I am not smarter than a 5th grader." Ugh!

As if the 5th graders could answer college level and real world questions adults have to contend with everyday!

11. Saw two episodes...

it's pretty bad.

Very slow, the contestants are dumb, and the questions really aren't the level they claim to be. Yeah, they're mostly easy, but they had 1st grade spelling include "how many "e's" are there in "Pledge of Allegiance". I don't think I was spelling words like "allegiance" in first grade.

Last night was a 5th grade question - what geologic era are we in now? (Answer: Cenozoic). I don't think we covered that in 5th grade.

"What planet is usually the brightest in the night sky." I've never heard the word usually used in a game show question before. I also think the show screams "Hey Americans are dumb and we know it".

that seems to be the whole point of the game.

And even Jeff Foxworthy gets to be snide and arrogant.

I guess the rednecks were too confused by "Deal or No Deal", so they needed a show where they could look down on others. There's a lotta numbers on DoND, ya know...

14. I think most people willing throw out knowledge they don't need to store

So I'm not sure that the show proves American's are any dumber than other people across the globe.

I graduated with honors from college but if you asked me something out of the blue about history I couldn't guarantee that the answer would just pop into my head.

It's not the difficulty of the questions that as me as much as the premise and attitude. I don't think, for the most part, that we are dumber than anyone else. We just revel in looking and acting like we are.

17. I watched it.

The contestants are too dumb to be believed. Also, everybody talks too much. They need to skip all of the hemming and hawing and conversationalizing and get to the game show part.

18. Too much talking, hand-wringing, hemming and hawing

Just what eventually turned me off of Do You Want to Be a Millionaire. Game shows should be faster-paced. But I did enjoy watching the reactions of the kids, especially when they immediately knew the answers and the adults were next to them sweating bricks.

If the contestant looks excited to see Jeff Foxworthy, then no.

and paint it cammo?

Watching his mental gears grind out the answer to 5 x 2 was exciting TV.
