I will admit, though, that back in 2000, when the man of that family and I took all our kids around the neighborhood to trick-or-treat on Halloween, he and I talked some politics and he was for mccain back then. And he lamented that "george bush is SO STOOOOOOOOOOPID." I know they went ahead and voted for him, though. Well, looks like mccain loses 'em this time, too.

They went with their youngest daughter to see him speak here last Thursday and she got to shake his hand. They related that story to us with great pride, saying they thought he could really unite the country and they really liked how he was "all about hope" - they kept saying "he just gives everybody so much hope!" And I said I thought it would be so wonderful to have Obama's be America's Face to the World - especially after we've so thoroughly shat upon the Third World for so long. They agreed enthusiastically, and they added that they thought he might even be able to build coalitions in the Islamic world - to promote peace.

Now I've seen everything.

Maybe there really is hope!

I just wanted to share that with you - I'll be walking on air for the rest of the weekend, I think!

There's this "Sense of the Sisterhood" in me that's awfully strong and compelling. I LOVE her brains. I just do. But she has all that baggage and we'd never hear the end of it with Whitewater, Bill and Monica, bimbo eruptions, and all the rest of it. We'd Never. Hear. The. End. Of. It.

And I'm becoming more convinced that HIS is what should be America's Face to the World. Imagine how that would speak to the Muslim world - when they start seeing something/someone from the dreaded, reviled US - who looks kinda like them, who seems like he'd be more open and more sympathetic, might be more approachable (people hate what they don't understand, what seems strange and alien and foreign to them), it would be SO healing and refreshing. It would do SO MUCH to rehabilitate us in the eyes of the rest of the world, where we are now grievously afflicted and our wounds are strictly self-inflicted. Someone new who doesn't come with a lot of baggage. And think how it would make us feel, deep down, about ourselves as a nation. In ONE individual there would be a sense of maturity and evolution - a physical symbol of how we've actually grown up a little and gotten over ourselves and come to our senses on the issue of race - that we've FINALLY triumphed over that huge and very shameful skeleton in our closet, the millstone around our necks, of slavery and racial inequality. This would be one amazing symbol of growth, and the emergence of our higher selves.

How could that be a bad thing?

Besides, I kinda relish the idea of mumbling something subtle about white sheets to CONservatives who oppose him. Sorry... there's too much of a "they need to get the snot beaten out of 'em" feeling in me. Can't quite disabuse myself of that, yet. I said "WE" would be grown up. I never said "I" would be!

I think it's a very safe bet to assume that either Obama or Clinton would not be bringing the same group of criminals into power with them as assistants and advisors and colleagues. Especially Obama. That's key. It's also a safe bet, knowing where both Obama and Clinton stand on the issues, that we would be likely to have a VASTLY improved selection of nominees to the bench, be it Supreme Court, appeals courts, and farther down. We'd have a VASTLY improved set of candidates for all the cabinet positions and agencies, from either Clinton or Obama, mainly because neither believes that government is the problem, but rather an instrument of doing good for the most people, especially the little guy as opposed to the high-roller or corporate fat-cat. So you would then be able to expect that there would be fewer ill-equipped, ulterior motive-driven cronies or other foxes nominated to guard the hen houses. You wouldn't have a bunch of cheapskate short-sighted assholes put in charge of agencies and departments - who believe that those same agencies and departments shouldn't exist in the first place. You just wouldn't have that kind of mentality governing such selections. It WOULD be different. Because the basic mindset is different.

Maybe you'd have an Obama forced to govern from the "center" but the basic overview of what constitutes a "center" would be different from a Democrat than from a regressive republi-CON - whose pals have spent the last few decades trying to pull that "center" radically to the so-called "right." I'd rather have one of MY people in there, working on his or her definition of these political terms, than the mindset that you'd have from ANY of the republi-CONS, who would see those same political terms entirely differently, and utterly hostile to the views my team has.

I find libertarians most intriguing. On paper it sounds great. No government! Get it all outta here. NO interference! Don't tread on me! And in Ron Paul's view, no war, and legalize drugs! (My high school-age son says all his friends love Ron Paul because they heard he's against the war and he wants to legalize all drugs and that's enough for them, that's all they need to hear. And yet, that's not even half the story!) Yeah, but I'm sure they'd still insist on having their trash picked up on time every week, and all potholes fixed before they break a front axle driving over them, and fire departments ready to respond in an emergency, and SOMEBODY inspecting our food and our toys and our pet food and other imports from China so our kids and animals aren't poisoned. THAT'S WHY WE HAVE A FEDERAL GOVERNMENT!!! Even some of the most arch-conservatives out there and the most strident anti-government activists had to concede that it would have been nice to have an effective FEMA on the case during and after Hurricane Katrina - especially when such a disaster overwhelms the local or state ability to cope, AND that same disaster crosses state lines. Which then renders it a federal matter. You NEED a federal government for more than just war-making. In this day and age, you just do. That's the reality. And you need tax money to fund that government and the services it provides. If the private sector could handle things properly, honestly, responsibly, with accountability and with integrity, without having to be watched and regulated to prevent corner-cutting and shortsighted quarterly profit-taking, I think we'd have already seen it. But in the real world, that's just not how it works out.

After all, EVERY member of the House of Reps is up for renewal, and a third of the Senate - with far more GOP seats at risk than Dems. I'm beginning to think our chances for a rather smashing victory may well be FAR better with Barack.

Besides, dammit, I just can't get past the idea of HIM being America's Face to the World. With a whole lot of the world flowing through his arteries and veins, how could it not help us start rehabilitating ourselves and rejoining the family of nations, instead of being this arrogant rogue menace that nobody trusts, nearly everybody fears, and few people want to do business with?

They have several daughters. 41. Nah - it's just that my kids have grown up with their kids. We watched their house

and their sleeping toddler when he had to take her to the hospital to have their next baby. The baby after that spent half her time growing up at our house. Best friends with my daughter, married my son when they were all in the bathtub together one afternoon when they were four and he was about 2 (didn't last - they got divorced a few days later). I took them all trick-or-treating around the neighborhood year after year after year, and we exchanged sleepovers til as recently as Christmas break when my daughter was home from college and made a beeline for their house. So with them it's kinda hard to hold a grudge, but it was also hard to have a meeting of the minds. We never spoke exactly the same language. He's the executive type who does the country club scene. My guy likes to hang out and play music and watch "Star Trek" on DVD. But hey - I'm gonna make room for 'em, FOR SURE!

Did you hear this -- it immediately made me think of this thread.

Oprah mentioned she had been discussing politics with many of her friends, some of whom are Republicans. She has had very interesting discussions and received favorable feedback. But one of the best stories relayed to her by her Republican friends concerned the night when the family sat down to watch the Republicans debate. After a few moments, the three-year son inquired, "Where is Rock O'Mama?"

I think our 2008 candidates are instilling a lot of emotions into a lot of families, regardless of their political labels - inspiration, awe, humility, onenationness (like that word?) and last but not least, humor. They do us proud.

Once again, I am proud to be an American, and secondarily, I am very proud to be a Democrat. But most of all, I am so proud of that three-year old who had the audacity to hope his Republican parents could find Rock O'Mama for him! We need to find that kid and put him in a commercial!

She brought us an Obama yard sign. She was all atwitter. She'd just come back from walking precincts all over Santa Monica - ringing doorbells and talking to people about Obama. Wanted to know if we'd like the sign. Uh - WOULD we?!?!?!?!? My husband and I both walked out with her and she helped us plant it. And I told her how cute her mom was a few hours earlier.
