my Dad was in Stalag Luft 3 (All Officers) from June 1943-April 1945.

from April 1944-May 1945. He was an officer and co-pilot of a B-17 who was shot down and bailed out.

my Dad may have known your Dad. Mine was stationed in England and flew a B-17 as a Navigator. He was shot down over Germany in June 1943 and was liberated by Patton in April/May of 1945. My Dad seldom speaks about his experience, as it was not very pleasant to say the least. Also will not eat barley as that is what they were mostly fed, except for the care packages that they got from the Red Cross on occasion. A few years ago, Dad showed me the journal that he kept in the POW camp - a very detailed account of daily life in the camp.

My father didn't talk much about it, either, until later years when I asked him. He was housed near the entrance to the camp and could watch all the comings and goings. There was a time when the Red Cross boxes weren't getting through and they had little to eat, but he did say that it wasn't all that bad. The Germans took them swimming in the Baltic, where the camp was located. They also were allowed ice skates until it was discovered that some guys were using the blades as wire cutters. One day they woke up and all the Germans were gone. The townspeople were starving and trying to get in because they believed the POWs were living like kings. Stalag Luft 1 was liberated by the Russians, My dad is 91 and still drives to an airport every day to hang out with a couple of other vets. He flew a B-17 at the Oshkosh air show once.

their ordeal. My Dad is now 93 and in an Assisted Living Facility in Florida. He's now pretty frail, but still has all his marbles so that I can hold a fairly decent conversation with him. His short term memory is not that great due to a fall about 4 years ago (had an operation to stop bleeding on the brain from a bad fall). The POW camp that Dad was in was in the central part of Germany, south of Berlin. No ice skating trips for Dad, but he did get Red Cross packages without any stoppages. Toward the end of the war, they moved them to another camp in a forced march, which took a great toll on all of the men. He was in the American part of the camp portrayed in The Great Escape - the ones that escaped were Brits. They dug many tunnels, but they were all discovered by the Germans.

for my Dad. I think that the transition was hard for some and not for others, depending on their combat experiences. These guys had the GI Bill, a decent economy and were treated well when they returned (unlike those returning from Vietnam). My Dad married my Mom a year after getting back, went to school part-time and raised two kids, so it seems he adjusted well to civilian life.

127. Stalag Luft III

My dad passed away in 2003, but before that he would go each and every year to their reunions. The number of survivors got smaller and smaller over the years. My dad was the co-pilot of the B-17 Mary Ruth and was shot down on the 8th mission over a ball bearing plant in the German city of Huls (sp?). Two of his crew members were trapped and died in the plane. In his parachute, my dad crashed through the roof of a barn and broke both legs and the Germans also shot him in the hips. He nearly died in a POW hospital. In that hospital, he met a giant Russian named Ivan who had been shot through the gut at Stalingrad and a French officer who had been wounded and captured while fighting in the Free French Army with under Montgomery in Africa. The Russian Ivan would bathe my dad and carry him around, as he was too injured to walk or even sit upright. The three of them planned to steal a German plane and fly to Switzerland, but my dad unfortunately was transferred to the POW camp before they could take action. The French officer's wife was in the resistance and he gave my father a list of her name and the names and addresses of others to contact in case he made his way to France, which he ordered my dad to swallow after memorizing. On the particular mission when he was shot down, my dad was caught wearing a British officer's uniform which he wore as a joke. His crew was a pretty lively bunch and they were selected by John Steinbeck as the subject of his newspaper articles that he sent back home. Steinbeck was a war correspondent and he mentions my dad in the compilation of war memoirs "Once There Was A War". The Germans wondered why an American plane had a man wearing a British officer's uniform and they tortured him to try to get information. My dad was very badly wounded and his hip and leg bones wouldn't heal. He was sent back to the States as part of a prisoner of war exchange with the Germans through the country of Portugal. My dad left Stalag Luft III just as "Savage" (the real life name of the character Steve McQueen was playing) and his cohorts made their escape.

That movie, along with "Le Mans" and "Winning" are a great picture of the old-style racing scene, like when you could drive your car to the track and then race it (not at the level of racing in those two movies, but just below it). Paul Newman was the most talented actor/racer. Additionally, Steve McQueen, James Dean and Tim Considine also raced; as you probably know Dean was on his way to a race when he crashed & died.

the short lived (1 season) but brilliant anti-establishment western with Margot Kidder and Stuart Margolin. I remember watching it with my Dad. I'd love to find it on DVD but doubt it will ever come on.

If memory serves me correctly the opening sequence had James Garner ,as an army scout, on an old Indian motor cycle watching a machine gun demonstration. One look and he took off into the sunset.....LOL.

He was the sheriff without a gun, who hated violence and always tried ways to resolve issues without it.
I also watched it with my dad. The show was on one season in 1971 when I was 13. The show tried to address violence and racism

I did find DVDs of the show, crude copies of tapes made from reruns that were shown on the armed forces network.

The show is not as good as I remember it, but that is mostly due to 1971 production values.

I never have watched the DVD of the final episode, when they killed Nichols and replaced him with his twin brother, also played by James Garner, who carried a gun. The networks thought a tough guy sheriff would be more popular.

"The Children's Hour" where he was Audrey Hepburn's boyfriend. She and Shirley MacLaine ran a girl's school and were "accused" of being lesbians more or less.

The part he played was very sympathetic to the fact that Shirley's character probably was a lesbian - very much ahead of it's time.

I read that biography! The only criticism I have with it is it didn't give much detail on his friendship with Stuart Margolin. It stated that Garner and Margolin were "best friends" but didn't provide details on how they met and did not provide any anecdotes.

I only knew of him as the big movie star and knew nothing about his politics...Because I grew up in Oklahoma, I also knew he was an Oklahoma native and went to my alma mater, Oklahoma University, where I heard that he was an SAE (Sigma Alpha Epsilon)....The source article doesn't refer to his college roots so I'm not certain about his college days.

I do remember seeing him in the parade, though....riding a horse and in a cowboy outfit.I always thought that it was so humble of him to come to this little town (25,000 +/-) in Oklahoma just to be in our parade. I think it must have been when he was in Maverick and just before he went bigtime.
