Trump insider fretting over how he'll deal with getting his mic cut during Biden debate

Raw Story

With both Donald Trump and President Joe Biden prepping for the June 27 debate — the first of the 2024 presidential campaign — there are growing concerns within the former president's camp that the two-minute time limit for answers combined with the candidate's mic being muted when it is not their turn will prove difficult for Trump who is known to ramble.

...snip...

One former adviser to Trump said the new restrictions may put the former president at a disadvantage.

With the Times report noting, "For his part, Mr. Trump has never consented to anything resembling traditional, rigorous debate preparation, and this election appears no exception. He has often said that he is at his best when improvising," former 2020 Trump campaign adviser Marc Lotter admitted, "He views his rallies as debate prep. If they’re literally going to cut your mic, you’ve got to hit your marks."

As for the Biden side, Kate Bedingfield, who helped Biden prep for the debates in 2020, remarked, "The goal is no surprises. In some ways, you have to be prepared for the unimaginable. So the aim of the process is to acclimate President Biden to the idea that some really awful things may come out of Donald Trump’s mouth.”

Michael Cohen to Challenge Jerry Nadler

Political Wire

Michael Cohen told New York Magazine that he will challenge Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) in the 2026 Democratic primary: “He’s been in office 30 years. We thank him for his service, but it’s enough already.”

Nadler responded to Playbook: “What a great country America is. Anyone can run for Congress — even con men.”

Meet the 24-year-old trying to solve Biden's problems with young voters

Washington Post

This spring, 24-year-old Eve Levenson returned to her alma mater, George Washington University, as the national youth engagement director for President Biden’s campaign. She was uncertain how she would be received.

Levenson was worried that protesters might interrupt the political networking event she was keynoting, according to the then-president of the GW College Democrats. Anytime she visits a campus, Levenson acknowledged in an interview, she anticipates encountering people with a range of views. She played it safe in her remarks, avoiding polarizing topics such as Biden’s age and the Israel-Gaza war and focusing on her youth organizing experience.

“She’s in a very difficult position right now,” said Sarah Freeman, who served as president of the GW College Democrats and organized the visit. “It’s hard to engage the youth vote both with what’s going on in the Middle East … and also just the fact that [Biden] is so far away in age from everybody in college.”

Levenson has what might be one of the hardest jobs on Biden’s reelection campaign, charged with persuading young Americans, many of whom are deeply skeptical of Biden, to vote for him in November. A political activist since high school, when she first met now-Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez, Levenson has a job that requires helping equip students to counter criticism of the president and training volunteer leaders and organizers to talk to voters not yet sold on voting for him.

Email from Justice Democrats: "If Clinton REALLY cared about....."

Hillary Clinton just officially endorsed AIPAC-backed, conservative career politician George Latimer over progressive incumbent Rep. Jamaal Bowman in New York’s 16th district:

Tweet from Hillary Clinton: With Trump on the ballot, we need strong, principled Democrats in Congress more than ever. In Congress, @LatimerforNY will protect abortion rights, stand up to the NRA, and fight for President Biden’s agenda—just like he’s always done. Make a plan to vote by June 25th!

If Clinton really cared about protecting abortion rights and supporting President Biden’s agenda, she wouldn’t endorse the candidate in this race taking millions from Donald Trump donors and opposing Biden’s proposal to raise taxes on the wealthiest few.

What can we say? We’re disappointed, but not surprised. Clinton received $4.1 million from AIPAC’s network over the course of her political career, so it’s not shocking that she’s supporting their hand-picked challenger running against a true, progressive champion for the people.

What it does show is the establishment knows our people-powered movement is stronger than their rich mega-donors. That’s why they’re putting every inch of power they can into unseating Jamaal — this is literally the most expensive U.S. House primary in history because of AIPAC’s corporate, Republican-fueled war chest.

The Resistance to a New Trump Administration Has Already Started

New York Times

Opponents of Donald J. Trump are drafting potential lawsuits in case he is elected in November and carries out mass deportations, as he has vowed. One group has hired a new auditor to withstand any attempt by a second Trump administration to unleash the Internal Revenue Service against them. Democratic-run state governments are even stockpiling abortion medication.

A sprawling network of Democratic officials, progressive activists, watchdog groups and ex-Republicans has been taking extraordinary steps to prepare for a potential second Trump presidency, drawn together by the fear that Mr. Trump’s return to power would pose a grave threat not just to their agenda but to American democracy itself.

“Trump has made clear that he’ll disregard the law and test the limits of our system,” said Joanna Lydgate, the chief executive of States United Democracy Center, a nonpartisan democracy watchdog organization that works with state officials in both parties. “What we’re staring down is extremely dark.”

While the Supreme Court on Thursday rejected an attempt to nullify federal approval of the abortion pill mifepristone, liberals fear a new Trump administration could rescind the approval or use a 19th-century morality law to criminalize sending it across state lines.

Northeast and Midwest prepare for dangerously hot temperatures and heat dome

Source: CBS News

Things are about to heat up in much of the U.S. with dangerously hot temperatures in the Midwest and Northeast next week, prompting health officials to urge people to make plans now to stay safe.

The heat wave follows an earlier-than-usual one in the Southwest last week, which saw triple-digit temperatures in cities like Phoenix, where there were 645 heat-related deaths last year. The world has seen record-high temperatures this year, with more than three-quarters of the global population experiencing at least one month of extreme heat.

Last year the U.S. had the most heat waves — abnormally hot weather lasting more than two days — since 1936. In the South and Southwest, last year was the worst on record, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The next heat wave will ramp up Sunday in the center of the country before spreading eastward, the National Weather Service said, with some areas likely to see extreme heat reaching daily records. The heat wave could last all week and into the weekend in many places. Parts of the country will also see a heat dome, where hot air is trapped by the atmosphere.

The dread election: Share of "double haters" hits historic high

Trump has made inroads with Republican critics in recent weeks, using a visit to Capitol Hill — and a handshake with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) — to showcase the GOP's post-primary unity.
** Former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, whose primary voters represent a huge cross-section of Trump-Biden skeptics, finally endorsed Trump last month.
**A steady drumbeat of wealthy GOP donors who condemned Trump after Jan. 6 are once again getting out their checkbooks, unable to stomach a second Biden term.

Between the lines: 67% of "double haters" believe Trump should end his campaign in the wake of his felony conviction, according to a recent ABC News/Ipsos poll.
** The Biden campaign sees that and other polling data as evidence that the president will win over this critical bloc of voters by the time Nov. 5 arrives.
** "They may dislike both candidates, but the intensity on Trump's negative is higher," Democratic pollster Jefrey Pollock told Axios. "A campaign that has the resources to persuade those individuals has some advantage."

The evolution of Ritchie Torres

City & State NY

Progressives found an ally they could count on. And so did voters, who in 2020 elected him to the 15th Congressional District. Since his time in office, some $3 billion in federal funds have arrived to his district that touches Mott Haven in the South Bronx and extends up to Riverdale.

These days, his relationship with progressives has strained. While rifts date back as far as 2017, a massive chasm has formed following Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel, a conflict that, more broadly, drove a wedge into the Democratic Party.

While progressives like Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar have cast Israel as the oppressor for leveling the Gaza Strip, Torres has taken unabashed swings at anyone criticizing the country’s response. He calls the response, which has left Gaza in ruins, a form of self-defense. For Torres, there is no nuance: Israel is the victim; Hamas is the aggressor. He wants a ceasefire, only with conditions. His positions have made him a polarizing figure these days. He has been called a shill, a mouthpiece and the N-word. He has also received death threats.

His battleground is usually social media, where – sandwiched between posts on legislative accomplishments for the district – he lobs merciless missives at critics of Israel. He has reserved his sharpest adjectives for the DSA, calling them “despicable, detestable, disgraceful, and disgraced.” He has also directed his ire at colleges and universities, which he deems to be a breeding ground for antisemitism.“Garbage in, garbage out,” read one of Torres’ posts condemning a pro-Palestinian supporter at Columbia University.
