I just watched The Zookeepers Wife.

I have a tear in my eye and fear in my heart for what we may well see in the near future. They may be coming soon. It may be for the Jews or just Women or Black or any POC. Perhaps Native Americans or Muslims. It is coming perhaps, not to a theater near you but to America. It is already here...it is starting. Beware.

RESIST

..........................................................

The real-life story of one working wife and mother who became a hero to hundreds during World War II. In 1939 Poland, Antonina Żabińska (portrayed by two-time Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain) and her husband, Dr. Jan Żabiński (Johan Heldenbergh of “The Broken Circle Breakdown”), have the Warsaw Zoo flourishing under his stewardship and her care. When their country is invaded by the Germans, Jan and Antonina are stunned – and forced to report to the Reich’s newly appointed chief zoologist, Lutz Heck (Daniel Brühl of “Captain America: Civil War”). To fight back on their own terms, Antonina and Jan covertly begin working with the Resistance – and put into action plans to save lives out of what has become the Warsaw Ghetto, with Antonina putting herself and even her children at great risk.

Wonderful character who really portrayed the pain that was inflicted not so long ago. That horror is not something that goes back in some bottle. It is a basic part of the human experience and is acted out continuously on one peoples or another.

Antonina and Jan were heroes, and there were other anonymous people in Warsaw who were helping the resistance as well.

I liked Antonina’s explanation about why she preferred animals over people: when she looked in an animal’s eyes, she could see the animal for what he/she is; but when she looked in the eyes of a human, it was impossible to see into the soul to know what was behind the eyes.

Great movie.
