(7,947 posts)She had a dry but sharp humor, and often came up with the line that really typified the situation's absurdity.

(81,970 posts)Yes any work of art that stands the test of time is genius, and a classic.
I still laugh when Dick Van Dyke almost falls over the ottoman in the opening scenes...
Rhiannon12866
(257,369 posts)Followed by a couple of "Dick Van Dyke Show" episodes for the next hour. I do believe they're available online. And Netflix. When I'm visiting someone who has Netflix, the shows I watch are Dick Van Dyke and Andy Griffith.

(257,369 posts)When I've been visiting, we watched The Odd Couple and The Waltons - which were new to me since I never saw them first run. When I was in college, I used to watch The Untouchables on the local station weeknights, so my brother got me the series on DVD for my birthday.

(24,943 posts)I'm surprised at the numbers that are still (as my late grandmother would say) still alive and kicking
Julie Gibson (1913) Olivia de Havilland, Kirk Douglas, Nehemiah Persoff (I was surprised he was still alive), Norman Lloyd, Sono Osato and Norma Miller
A lot born in the 20's and 30's are still around

(24,943 posts)She said she owes part of her success to Capone and Siegel, which I find interesting
She worked with and knew so many unique people, like WC Fields

(14,720 posts)Their show ran for about the exact same time period that a show like Mad Men is set in. He didn't hesitate to add a dominant female co-writer character working with Buddy and Rob. I remember that stuck out to me as a kid from a traditional conservative family where the woman's place is in the home.

(196,915 posts)Ellie was the first professional woman in American Tv.
Ellie was on from October 1960 to May 1961. The Dick Van Dyke show ran from October 1961 to June 1966.

(77,053 posts)She was a high school teacher, which is a professional gig.
The run of the show, which was a radio show prior to the TV version, ENDED the year i was born.

(196,915 posts)Yes teachers are of course professionals but besides teachers and nurses there hadn't been a woman with another degree on TV until Ellie.

(77,053 posts)Here's the weird thing though: While "lady druggists" (the way Emma referred to Ellie), were rare, our family knew a well to do southern italian immigrant family (dad from italy, daughters born here). There were BOTH pharmacists and owned their own drug store.
Knew them since i was a little kid, so a "lady druggist" wasn't that big a deal to me. So, when i saw Ellie as a pharmacist on TV, i probably thought nothing of it.
