'Get smart!' Trump walks back attack on his own White House after getting tricked by 'Fox & Friends'

President Donald Trump on Thursday attacked his own administration’s position on foreign surveillance legislation because of a segment he watched on “Fox & Friends” — and then quickly walked it back just an hour later.

“I have personally directed the fix to the unmasking process since taking office and today’s vote is about foreign surveillance of foreign bad guys on foreign land,” Trump wrote in response to an earlier tweet he sent out Thursday morning. “We need it! Get smart!”

Earlier in the morning, Trump undermined the White House’s position on renewing Section 702 of the FISA Amendments Act after a “Fox & Friends” segment suggested that this act was used to conduct warrantless spying on Trump’s campaign.

“‘House votes on controversial FISA ACT today,'” the president wrote, quoting directly from the Fox segment. “This is the act that may have been used, with the help of the discredited and phony Dossier, to so badly surveil and abuse the Trump Campaign by the previous administration and others?”

As CNN’s Kaitlan Collins pointed out, the White House on Wednesday night issued a statement urging Congress to “preserve the useful role FISA’s Section 702 authority plays in protecting American lives” — which means “Fox & Friends” effectively tricked Trump into contradicting his own administration.
