1. you overestimate the American electorate

unfortunately much of politics is emotional these days. So while many GOP voters will say they disagree w/ things Trump says, when they reach the ballot box they've been trained to think that liberals are the worst, so they will hold their nose and vote GOP. Look at Alabama if you need any evidence. Roy Moore is darn near a sitting US senator.
