GM will make an autonomous car without steering wheel or pedals by 2019.

General Motors plans to mass-produce self-driving cars that lack traditional controls like steering wheels and pedals by 2019, the company announced today. Its a bold declaration for the future of driving from one of the country’s Big Three automakers, and one that is sure to shake things up for the industry as the annual Detroit Auto Show kicks off next week.

The car will be the fourth generation of its driverless, all-electric Chevy Bolts, which are currently being tested on public roads in San Francisco and Phoenix. And when they roll off the assembly line of GM’s manufacturing plant in Orion, Michigan, they’ll be deployed as ride-hailing vehicles in a number of cities.

“It’s a pretty exciting moment in the history of the path to wide scale [autonomous vehicle] deployment and having the first production car with no driver controls,” GM President Dan Ammann told The Verge. “And it’s an interesting thing to share with everybody.”

The announcement coincides with the tail end of CES, where a number of big companies announced their own plans to deploy autonomous vehicles, and right before the Detroit Auto Show, where the industry will have on display all the trucks and SUVs that make its
profits.

PA has 2 dumb laws listed at dumblaws.com that I think might technically still be on the books.

Any motorist driving along a country road at night must stop every mile and send up a rocket signal, wait 10 minutes for the road to be cleared of livestock, and continue.

Any motorist who sights a team of horses coming toward him must pull well off the road, cover his car with a blanket or canvas that blends with the countryside, and let the horses pass.

To be fair though, there were reasons for some of these dumb laws at the time. Horses and other livestock were terrified of cars. Horses especially were prone to becoming uncontrollable and fleeing in panic, which tended to injure anyone riding the horse, or anyone in a carriage the horse was pulling along.

10. I think this is so dumb. I enjoy driving.

Pretty soon there will be machines to automatically extract waste from our bodies so we don't have to exert ourselves by going to the bathroom. I saw a computerized toilet seat on the tube the other day. You can personalize it somehow and tell it to flush based upon how much you did or did not crap. No wonder we're so fat and lazy - we can't even hand flush a toilet anymore.
