To be clear about the Salvation Army Issue

The Salvation Army isn't merely against marriage equality. They also don't just want to discriminate against gays in charitable activities funded by their own money. They discriminate in the provision of charity even when such charity is funded by the government and lobby to overturn local non discrimination laws. They also lobby to gain exemptions from such laws while still receiving government money. That is the issue. If they don't want gays in their church, that is their right. It isn't their right to keep gays out of their government funded charities.

I have always looked up to the Salvation Army for all that they do to help people, and they have never asked anyone for financial statements and tax returns to prove that they are needy enough. They just help. I am saddened to hear of any lobbying efforts that they are doing. And needless to say, it hurts me to think that they are intolerant of others.

Another noble charity down the tubes!

because of this. Our local rescue mission is like this but we are working with them and I think we may fix that. SA gets not a penny from us.

Thanks for clearing that up so well. People really don't know this about them, we must keep it out there for them to see.

Many recipients don't realize they're receiving government funded services and think the church has done thema good turn

It also frees up the church group to use their own funds to work against rhe rights and dignity of those they oppose.

...towards gays.

They also protected members over the wards that those members abused.

They pulled their wards from school at the earliest legal opportunity, and put them to work, taking most of those ward's wages, giving them back only a few dollars pocket money.

I'm not going to get into a justification of the SA's conduct, with regard to their refusal to hire gay people, which they have based on their religious beliefs. It's wrong, plain and simple.

However, they are the ones who consistently do business on skid rows, where none of the tonier charities seem to want to go. They do reach out to the people who smell the worst, have the least, and are the most desperate.

If you don't like them, don't support them.

Why bother with them, anyway? I donate to the local homeless shelter instead or ANYTHING but a religious group who most likely does not share my values. I didn't know how they treated the issue of gays until recently (although I could have guessed.) All I knew is that they were religious and NOT the liberal kind of religious, so the last time I dropped money into their pot was decades ago.

they wanted to discriminate against who work for them. Get a clue, Salvation Army. Sounds like an awful bunch if they don't want to hire gays as if it would rub off or endanger their souls!!!

My donations may be meager, but they will go to a GOOD charity this year, and from here on out. All these organizations that discriminate against gays will only get the message when people make it clear to them, by withholding their money and their participation.
