General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsToday I observe, but not celebrate, an anniversary.
Today is 28 years of sobriety for me. I don't consider bit to be particularly remarkable, but simply a continuation of a long string of "one day at a time" decisions.
If you are struggling with alcoholism or any other form of addiction, I promise you that you CAN get here from there. Life will not be perfect, but I promise you that it will be better.
In my boozing days my wife wouldn't have given me a second look and I wouldn't have deserved it.
Thank you for reading.

(6,262 posts)Have a close friend who is close to 20 yrs of ODAT. No one ever thought they would be able to get through a month, let alone 20 years.
Scared serious by family intervention, then had the dough to get to Betty Ford, then the unbelievable hard work and diligence and constant sharing of its importance to their life.... and voila! Twenty Years! And yet, still, ODAT.
Many many meetings, sometimes two or three times a day if possible by traveling to other venues, reaching out, appreciating those who honor their sobriety, and on and on.
Congrats!

(63,221 posts)That is no small accomplishment and it is remarkable, even if it was just "one day at a time". Addiction is a powerful force and to be able to resist that every day is something incredible. I wish you lasting health and happiness in your continued journey!

(3,064 posts)Youre right, things wont be perfect but it sure beats the alternative. In my sobriety Ive taken some hard shots but Ive never considered drinking as any type of remedy.
When I was first trying to stay sober I was as wobbly as a newborn colt. Then this old timer told me, Theres not a problem in the world that a drink wont make worse.
And that one sentence made so much sense to me.
