Substitute heroin for guns

literally:

Heroin doesn't kill people, people kill people.

If Heroin is outlawed only outlaws will have heroin.

Heroin is just an inanimate object. It can't kill anyone by itself.

Only careless people die from heroin accidents.

Heroin is my hobby and I have not hurt a single soul by owning it.

Using RW logic, I just made a very strong case to legalize heroin.

It is a strong argument.....isn't it?

Missiles don't kill people.
Nuclear weapons don't kill people.
Hand grenades don't kill people.
Landmines don't kill people.
Nooses don't kill people.

There are plenty of things explicitly designed to kill people that don't kill people.

I'm not a right winger, but agree with all your points. Heroin should be legal.

The most dangerous thing about drugs are the laws against them.

He uses the same argument for his dog but then repudiates it when it's applied to guns. He claims not experience any cognitive dissonance but I don't believe him.

Every heroin addict has drank milk, therefore, milk causes heroin addiction.

however if you believe that more guns = more crime these are indeed troubling stats.

If there were people arguing that drinking milk leads to heroin addiction and I could show milk consumption is on the rise but heroin is on the decline does that help or hurt their case?

Now you are backpeddling? So which is it? Are the "statistics" you are touting as a reason to have easy access to deadly weapons, caused by that or not? Make up your mind. You can't have it both ways, no matter what your fellow gunbots tell you.

I was merely pointing out that your assumption is flawed.

Yes or no: crime going down while gun ownership goes up supports the notion that guns contribute directly to crime rates?

You said that you "grok stats". Ever heard of an outlier?

Notice I said it was trending down. Not that all crime has been abolished forever.

/actually you said "grog" which I assume was a typo since saying "I 18th century rum based drink stats" doesn't make much sense.

Tue Jul 24, 2012, 11:04 AM

Or is the solution to "a huge and deadly" problem made it worse?

Prohibition has a poor, poor history in this country.

If you want to "do something", how about reducing poverty and increasing affordable access to stigma free mental health with no gotchas like seeking help for your depression and ending up on a list that follows you around when you go to get a hunting rifle or a job or may end up being used against you in ads if you ran for office.

Of course often "doing something" is actually doing nothing and zealously pretending you did like the goofy ass assault weapons ban that played around with cosmetic features, I assume to annoy consumers, but otherwise would not impact the situations it was supposed to reduce.
There was a poster yesterday who wanted to "do something" by restricting the number of weapons a person may have on them but was unable to explain how this would make a massacre less likely to happen. There is no expectation that such an initiative would actually impact the situation used to justify it, the point cannot logically be to "do something" about the problem because there is no argument it does.

Nobody is going to ever, not once in a billion times, going to be like I was going to commit mass murder but the law says I can only carry one gun, whatever shall I do about this dilemma?

When efforts do little to nothing to resolve the problem but serve to hamper law abiding, tax paying citizen you force them to be less receptive and "reasonable" to your way of thinking.
