Anybody know the extent of what a shut-down means ?

I know it’s not a total stoppage of all government, because when they talked about it in Obama’s admin they specified things like forced closure of National Parks ; and possibly late payments of stuff like social security disability.

But does this mean that Congress goes on mandatory recess to avoid spending tax dollars or that Trump could basically shutter the FBI for a period?

All National parks and zoos will close, unprocessed passports, Federal employees can't go to work, but if you work in a critical part of the federal govt you have to go to work, postal workers have to work, you need a fed loan you have to wait, no trash collection

Government shutdowns have the effect of disruption to government services and increased cost to the government due to lost labor. Standard & Poor's, the financial ratings agency, stated on October 16 that the shutdown had "to date has taken $24 billion out of the economy," and "shaved at least 0.6 percent off annualized fourth-quarter 2013 GDP growth."

Non Essential Federal employees get unpaid furloughed. The last shutdown in 2013, lasted 16 days and about 850,000 employees were locked out, 40 percent of the Federal workforce, and economy took a $24 billion hit. There is no law that says Federal employees will eventually be paid, although in the past the politicians that shutdown the government were nice enough to pass legislation to pay them retroactively, that might be different under Trump.

Activities related to national security, military, safety, air traffic control, law enforcement and veterans’ hospitals, are essential activities that carry on. So does the Postal Service has its own funding, and Social Security and Medicare checks get mailed, food stamps are distributed. People receiving veterans' benefits, unemployment insurance, and tax refunds may wait until Congress passes a spending bill.

The departments that will shut down are the National Park Service, National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We are in the middle of a really bad flu epidemic, and when the CDC isn't funded, it can't fight the spread of the flu and to track the spread of deadly diseases and infections across the country.

Public pressure to stop the madness will be huge, but Trump tends to childishly fight back and do the opposite of what normal people do. Mark my words, this won't end well.

You don’t get paid until its over. My cousin who worked for state during a long shutdown still worked but without pay for like 6 wks, that was in CA a long time ago.

I think it freezes tax refunds too.
