IIRC, Senate Dems pushed a law to demand disclosure of all contributions. Repubs blocked that.

You will know them by their actions.

Cheney, Republican money man, was directly involved in the selection of Roberts and Alito for the Supreme Court. This was during the Iraq fiasco, and he knew the chances of a Republican succeeding Bush Lite in the White House were little and none. It's almost a sure thing he discussed what would become the Citizens United case with both of them before selecting them. He needed SCOTUS Justices that would bless the plan, and who would shut up about it until it was put before them.

For the Republicans to sell an agenda that would be detrimental to the population, and demonize an agenda (Obama's) intended to help the population, they needed money injected into the electoral process--LOTS of it. They needed to nullify the effects of the McCain-Feingold limits. But none of their plan would have worked without a friendly Supreme Court ready to bless their scheme when subjected to an inevitable challenge.
