Take the Win, Democrats

Democrats are feckless. When it counts, they always fold. After all, they’re more beholden to donors and lobbyists than they are to their base.

This narrative is so old, so straightforward, and so pleasingly infuriating that it just rolls off the tongue. So when Democrats in Congress struck a compromise with Republicans to reopen the government late on Monday, the despairing headlines immediately took over every left-of-center publication in the country. “Schumer Sells Out the Resistance,” Michelle Goldberg concluded over at the New York Times. “The Democrats Are Losers,” my colleague Osita Nwanevu announced here at Slate. Twitter was no less forgiving: By the end of the evening, #SchumerSellout was trending across the country.

When I sat down to write this article, I assumed that the great minds of Twitter were right. You see, even though my job is to follow public policy pretty closely, there are times when I lose track of what is going on. Monday was such an occasion: It was the first day of the semester, and I spent the whole day printing syllabi, meeting with students, and teaching my introductory sessions. So when I finally got a chance to go online, and read the news, I assumed that all the despairing headlines must be right. My heart sank pondering what concessions Chuck Schumer must have made to draw such righteous anger.

I do not think the Democrats have sold out or betrayed. I think it is consistently this. Talking points and media and others promoting the negative talking points.

They were forced to release the majority of their child hostages (CHIP recipients).
They were forced to promise a vote on the remaining child hostages (DACA).

Whether McTurdle is lying (surprise surprise) or not, his PUBLIC promise of a DACA vote will harm him.

How is this NOT a Dem victory??

The Hill,Slate, and Comcast Media, stating it was the Dems who choked,is total bullshit. After watching the Senate after Schumer gave his remarks the other night, you would understand what really went down. The Dems got Mitch McConnell to own the Shut Down.

Now,DACA will be a Election Talking Point. The Koch Brothers/Adelson Caucus is not about to let any Dreamers or others with Brown skin stay in our Country. Count on it.

"Democrats are losers"

Oh the Whining! Damn the M$M and those who feed into their narrative.

Mahalo for this from Yascha Mounk.. Thank Goodness for people like him..

But that just doesn’t mean that we have seen “the Senate Democratic leadership sell the Dreamers out,” as Goldberg argues in the Times. After all, Democrats have only voted to extend funding for the government for another three weeks. Once that time is up, the fate of the Dreamers will not rest in McConnell’s hands any more now than it did a few days ago. For if the Senate majority leader goes back on his word, Democrats will enjoy exactly the same leverage they held until Monday: By withholding their votes, they will be able to shut the government down. And since McConnell’s betrayal will be so blatant, they will find it much easier to put blame for any resulting shutdown squarely on Republican shoulders."

The whole article was super interesting.. Thank you, Anny!

Thos is a masterful move by the Dems.
McConnell's power has to be stopped.
He is one of the most dangerous manipulative drivers of policy. Along with Paul Ryan, they have gamed the House & Senate & there needs to be a wedge driven firmly between them & the those who set policy.

Enough is enough & a big thanks to Dems who are smarter than McConnell when it came to saving first CHIP, & next DACA.

going to suddenly allow DACA to happen. The republicans and trump were not going to let that happen.

What it did do is allow funding for children's healthcare for six years, and put DACA on the front burner. When the 2018 election occurs, perhaps those self-identified progressives who feel strongly about DACA will vote Democratic

It puts DACA on the front burner and it's only DACA.. after mitch said he would open it up.

No one trusts him to do that but he's on record and the ball will be in his court.. and THEN the Dems can shut down the gov if they don't get DACA.. they already have shown they've acted in good faith.

Meantime we got CHIPS Funded..

It sounds pretty good for those who don't have the numbers to get All that they actually want.
