Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI went into the woods to see my brother.
I had to break down the door to his house. I found him on the floor in his den.
He passed in the middle of the woods he loved.

Im not diminishing any other kind of relationship. Im acknowledging the differences.
I apologize. This was meant to be a response to the original poster.

(21,323 posts)That's a rough one. Even the reflection that he was where he loved being doesn't un-do the pain of loss and the dread and shock of finding him dead.
You're not alone. You're connected. To communities, to friends, to people who care. Hang onto the connections, it's what they're for. Pain shared is pain in flow. In flow, pain washes through the emptiness, and eventually leaves healing in its wake.
May his memory be a blessing.

(11,767 posts)Sounds like he left this life at least in the location he wanted to be in.
I work with older and disabled people and often people are mortified that they choose to be at home, or in situations that other people might not agree with, and then die. My thought always goes back to the idea that self determination and being where you want to be doing what you want to do is something that we all aspire to, and many of the folks we deal with are doing that in their last moments.
I am sorry for your loss, but hopefully, as intimated in your post, you can take comfort that he was exactly where he wanted to be.

So sorry for your loss, and I'll comfort you with this:
Grits *can* be groceries. But only if used in the context of "Saturday is the day we make groceries here in our house" or "Mama is out making groceries".

(24,634 posts)I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practise resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms...
Henry David Thoreau
