George P. Bush's biggest problem could be Trump Jr.'s endorsement

In a tweet, which he pinned to the top of his timeline, Bush thanked Trump for his support. He is, he added, working alongside the president to implement the latter's "conservative agenda in Texas."
By doing so, Bush effectively endorsed Trump's claims to be the steward of conservatism in the United States - despite the fact that the president's agenda, such as it is, differs radically from the political philosophy his family has espoused for generations.
Whether that's a shrewd political strategy for any ambitious young Republican in Texas is debatable. The state GOP might be able to maintain its hold on power through 2018, or even 2020. But George P. is among the Republican officials who should be planning for the longer term. He could be a gubernatorial candidate in 2022, for example, and if elected governor of Texas, he would be a plausible contender for the presidency.

Election day is March 6, but early voting begins in less than two weeks, and it's hard to make predictions about what will happen. There are some interesting intraparty fights on both sides of the aisle this year, plus Trump's election has plunged Texas and the rest of the country into politically uncharted territory.
