I'm not really a sports fan, but I've always loved the Olympics and the spirit behind it. Yeah, I know the spirit has been diluted by advertising, corruption, etc. But that's not been where the athletes have come from, generally speaking. This year though? I'm just not feeling it. Not feeling particularly patriotic with Comrade Combover at the helm. Sucks, cause I look forward to the games.

I won a mixed doubles curling wager with Canada over United States. Canada could not afford to start 0-2.
To be honest, I'd rather be alone in this...for the sake of our athletes.
I haven't paid attention to them for a long time. Once they allowed professionals in I checked out.

(16,104 posts)but the 'Opening Ceremony' is tonight!
It's just getting started - and wound up! As usual, you kind of have to avoid news feeds if you want to maintain any suspense each evening, or you can stream live events at various times of day!

Weird without Russia committee etc . Due to Olympic ban

(21,646 posts)and to the same musical arrangement . The worst was all the storylines they built up around him on NBC tv right before his turn and then his fumbles came. Such buildup on tv here
I think they cut out the Israel skater who had a top ranking performance to show the storyline too.
It's called Olympic jitters and has doomed others . This was a team event 1/4 of team count but hope he calms down before the men's single
China did a move where it did not send out its best for the team event keeping them to perform at later more important individual events is my understanding
May prove to be well played for overall exposure medal win but not an extra medal win in numbers but also no one of higher ranking gets injured early on, physically or psychologically
It's their call so can't judge how they want to compete as a nation.
Russian absence one for the books too

I'll probably try to catch Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski, though.

(14,565 posts)The curling commentators and analysis are logically better on CBC.
I do give NBC credit for using multiple teams on curling commentary. The analysts are very good -- Kevin Martin, Pete Fenson and Jamie Sinclair.
The other two are famous older curlers but Sinclair is still in the prime of her career and came very, very close to winning the American Olympic Trials. I have been impressed with her commentary so far. NBCSN uses her on some of the more obscure games not involving the American team.

(15,392 posts)I guess it's more summer Olympics related, but I feel sorry for all the little girls who have sacrificed their childhoods (especially now), putting themselves through torture (or being put through torture) all in order to bring a fleeting sense of pride to their country. Seriously, other than a few big names, can anyone name any champions from the previous Olympics? Or the one before, etc? I"m trying to, and all I'm coming up with are my own monikers for them - Marijuana McSwimmerguy, Sourface Gymnastgirl, Shorty O'Attemptedbodyshaming...
Besides, chances are the majority of them are on some sort of performance enhancements. The science to detect them always lags behind the science that makes them. There's no reason to honor any kind of athlete from Olympic-level on up to Professional in just about any sport.

I cant stand the commentary during an artistic performance and the overwhelming number of commercials.

Ice Dancing, Figure Skating, Luge, and curling shouldn't be consider sports.

The Israeli team, believe it or not, is doing quite well.
And the US curling team, sigh.

(9,766 posts)it's way whacked that they delayed the opening ceremony until tonight. WTF.

(10,163 posts)Rather than show them live in real time on the West Coast US network execs decided to delay them more than a full day so that viewers on the East Coast could see them in the evening.

(5,815 posts)I like figure skating, skiing, luge, skeleton and curling. It is a great break from the sh*t storm going on in DC. There is only so much of that crap you can watch and not run screaming into the night! So when the DC mess gets to me, there is the escape route on NBC.
Curling is actually kind of fun once you get a little knowledge about it. Putting microphones on the Hamiltons was a great idea so we can hear them strategizing. It is a bit like chess and pool combined!

(3,608 posts)possible these next two weeks. For the second week I'm going to Indiana to visit my Aunt so I'll def. be missing some but what am I'm gonna do? I decided I'll take a day off next week to just watch it all day/night to try to make up for it.
At least when I get back to the hotel we can just watch that (going w/ my sister) because of course I'd put on CNN or msn and my sister is a Republican...so yeah maybe it's all working out for the best.

(32,096 posts)I LOVE hockey And snowboarding is a blast to watch. I also enjoy watching skiing and speed skating, also curling. While I mostly root for the American athletes, I tend to put the nationalism aside, and just enjoy watching the best athletes in the world competing.
